By 1634, the English colony of Virginia consisted of eight shires or counties with a total population of approximately 5,000 inhabitants.
In 1749, the portion of Isle of Wight County west of the Blackwater River became Southampton County.
Southampton County may have been named for Southampton, a major city in England, or for one of the founders of the Virginia Company and a great supporter of the colonization of Virginia, Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton.

William Mahone was born in Monroe in Southampton County, Virginia on December 1, 1826 to Fielding Jordan Mahone and Martha (née Drew) Mahone.
He was awarded a spot as a state cadet at the newly-opened Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia, and graduated with a degree as a civil engineer in the Class of 1847.

Nat Turner was born a slave in Virginia in 1800 and grew to become a slave preacher.
This group of 40 (or so) Blacks, led by Nat Turner, terrorized the white population of Southampton County, Virginia and killed 60 whites before the Virginia Militia and local residents killed or captured the insurgents.
On August 24, militia units from the surrounding counties descended on Jerusalem, Virginia and a massacre of Blacks in Southampton began.

Nat Turner, born into slavery in Southampton County, Virginia in 1800, felt himself marked for a special purpose.
Moving through Southampton County over the next forty hours, Turner's band was joined by over sixty other slaves, who cumulatively killed over fifty whites.
Military and police forces stifled the rebellion before it could reach the county seat of Jerusalem, but Turner escaped and evaded capture until October 30, when he was accidentally discovered.

However, the 1831 Southampton County Tax List indicates that Aaron was then the owner of 181 and 1/4 acres of land with a value of $540.75.
The records of the trials of Nat Turner and his accomplices are found in the Southampton County, Virginia, Court Minute Book for the years 1830-1835, pages 72 through 131.

 African American Registry: Slave rebellion in Virginia...
While a fugitive, it is estimated that around fifty-three Blacks were arrested and tried, twenty were hanged, twenty-one acquitted, and twelve transported out of Virginia.
It showed that many slaves were willing to die for freedom and resulted in the adoption of more rigid slave codes and laws.
The wood cut at the right (from an 1831 sketch by Samuel Warner), is entitled “Horrid Massacre in Virginia.” Turner was capture and executed on November 11th that year.
