Southbridge (computing) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Southbridge, also known as the I/O Controller Hub (ICH), is a chip that implements the "slower" capabilities of the motherboard in a northbridge/southbridge chipset computer architecture.
Because the southbridge is further removed from the CPU, it is given responsibility for the slower devices on a typical microcomputer.
Rarely, the southbridge may also include support for the keyboard, mouse, and serial ports, but normally these devices are attached through another device referred to as the Super I/O.

These newer concerns are among the many factors causing researchers to investigate new methods of computing such as the quantum computer as well as expand the usage of parallelism and other methods that extend the usefulness of the classical Von Neumann model.

What is Southbridge? - A Word Definition From the Webopedia Computer Dictionary
In Northbridge/Southbridge chipset architecture designs, the Southbridge is the chip that controls all of the computers I/O functions, such as USB, audio, serial, the system BIOS, the ISA bus, the interrupt controller and the IDE channels.
The Southbridge chip is one of two chips that control the functions of the chipset.
The Northbridge can consist of more than one discrete chips while the Southbridge is typically only one discrete chip that rests on the Northbridge’s PCI bus.

 Southbridge - a Whatis.com definition
Southbridge is an Intel chipset that manages the basic forms of input/output (I/O) such as Universal Serial Bus (USB), serial, audio, Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE), and Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) I/O in a computer.
Southbridge is one of two chipsets that are collectively called Northbridge/Southbridge.
Unlike Northbridge, Southbridge consists of one chip, which sits on Northbridge's PCI bus.

Understanding the Functionality of Your Motherboard Chipset
The CPU, Memory and AGP talk to the Northbridge and the Southbridge handles all the I/O, including the ISA bus.
The link between the CPU and Northbridge is called Front-side bus, which is (usually) the same speed as the Memory Bus, and can be varied, as when overclocking.
But even this is changing, because the essential problems that plagued the original PC still haven't gone away, in that some parts of the machine simply run too slowly, notably the PCI bus, which, at 33 MHz, is 10 times slower than even a 333 MHz CPU.

Serial ATA drives and SATA raid - Discussion@SR
The PCI bus was moved from the northbridge to the southbridge, and thus the ATA controllers no longer have to share PCI bus bandwidth.
Standard on-board controllers are integrated to the southbridge, so they can enjoy the greater bandwidth to the northbridge.
Not as good as a separate hub link for the controller but at least now the controller will have access to the bandwidth of the NB-SB interconnect and not be restricted by the bandwidth of the PCI bus.

With a computer equipped with the socket and bus capability, any device (for example, a video camera) can be plugged in while the computer is running.
Most computers have internal busses which have more bandwidth than their external busses (usually twice as much) since the bandwidth of the internal bus affects the speed of all operations and has less effect on the overall system cost than the bandwidth of the external bus.
In the past, computers of both IBM and Apple were more expensive than they could have been; the consumer has to pay for their research and development as well as advertising.
