Reading, Berkshire - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although the largest town in Berkshire over many centuries, Reading had to wait until the 1974 County change to become the official county town of Berkshire (when the much smaller town of Abingdon moved to Oxfordshire).
The Borough of Reading became a unitary authority area in 1998 when Berkshire County Council was abolished, and is now responsible for all aspects of local government within the borough.
The borough limits now include the former villages of Caversham, Southcote and Whitley together with part of the village of Tilehurst, but exclude several settlements which are still part of the urban area.

Country Houses of Berkshire: Southcote House
The moated Southcote House was originally the site of a medieval fortified manor house.
Only the late 15th century guardhouse, complete with vaulted well, survived a rebuilding in the early 17th century.
The house was leased out to various members of the family, notably John Blagrave, the famous mathematician, who is buried beneath a notable monument in St. Laurence's Church in Reading, and his nephew, Daniel, who signed Charles I's death warrant.

The history of the Cirl Bunting in Berkshire
The Berkshire Downs were clearly a favoured haunt, so there exists the possibility that this local population had already become established by the 1860s, while remaining unknown to naturalists for decades afterwards.
The modest number of records for Berkshire all concerned single birds, especially in the vicinity of Streatley Hill, where males in song were reported on a quite irregular basis in July 1961, May 1967, June 1972, May/June 1973, and April and August 1974.
This was never done in Berkshire, although the landmark survey work for the 1968-1972 Atlas, which sampled a part of every 10-km square in the county, did establish that it had become very uncommon by that period.

 BBC - Voices- Southcote
I've been working in Southcote for about the last six months - the first three months were spent introducing myself to people, learning about the area, and getting to grips with all things Southcote.
Part of 'Southcote Voices' was also about getting involved with community projects - two in particular we've been working on have been the conversion of a scrap of land at St. Matthew's Church to a play area, and the makeover of the gardens in front of a couple of blocks of flats in Granville Road.
There will be a BBC Radio Berkshire stand there, and we'll be doing a live show from Coronation Square previewing the event between 12 and 1 (the fun and games start at 2 and runs until about 5.) There will be music, a barbecue, and a whole variety of stalls.

Southcote submitted a bid to the council and was successful and was also given a fifteen hundred-pound community grant from Reading Council to assist in the running of the facility.
If we take the Southcote Digital Community in Berkshire as an example, the physical site for the project is based in a youth centre, which might not attract all sectors of the community, since it probably lacks the funds to heavily promote its presence and intentions to the local population.

Daniel Blagrave, the regicide, was the son of Alexander Blagrave of Southcote Manor, the famous Chess-Player, and his wife, Margaret.
He was also Parliamentary Treasurer for the county of Berkshire and, in 1654, was named one of the commissioners for the ejection of scandalous and inefficient ministers, in which capacity he was accused by his enemies of using undue severity and of proving a vexatious persecutor of the clergy.
By the means, which he had acquired from his different offices, he was able to purchase the fee-farm rent of the manor of Sonning, in Berkshire, and other estates, as it is said, on easy terms.
