The Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools is the regional body for the accreditation of higher education institutions in the Southern states (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia) and Latin America that award associate, baccalaureate, master’s, or doctoral degrees.
The Commission on Colleges supports the right of an institution to pursue its established educational mission; the right of faculty members to teach, investigate, and publish freely; and the right of students to access opportunities for learning and for the open exchange of ideas.
The Commission on Colleges expects institutions to dedicate themselves to enhancing the quality of their programs and services within the context of their missions, resources, and capacities, and to create an environment in which teaching, public service, research, and learning occur.

Once the School Improvement Plan is approved by the School Improvement Team it is then published and distributed to each member of the staff via e-mail and each member of the staff reviews the document and gives their final approval.
This School Improvement Plan was part of an overall Guilford County Schools initiative to standardize this process in all of the county schools, and High Point Central was directed to use the GCS format.

In order for a school to achieve or maintain accreditation, the standards serve as the guide and benchmark for schools to access, allocate, and use its available resources for the benefit of student learning.
In education today all schools, whether they are accredited or not, are expected to engage in a continuous process of improvement.
The difference for an accredited school is that an accredited school seeks feedback from an external group of professionals through peer review and is expected to demonstrate quality assurance to its stakeholders.

Schools that are pursuing accreditation through one of the above agencies, and meet all the other requirements, may apply for provisional membership.
Associate Membership is a special non-voting category that is intended for those schools whose circumstances prevent them from obtaining accreditation from the usual accrediting agencies.
