When Baptists in this country formed the first of their three national societies in 1814, many of their leaders recognized that there were numerous social, cultural, economic, and political differences between the businessmen of the North, the farmers of the West, and the planters of the South.
Southern Baptists continued to move toward an associational-type body until 1931 when, by constitutional action, practically all of the remaining society-type characteristics were eliminated from their convention.

The Southern Baptist Convention could have made history at their meeting last June in Indianapolis if they had voted in favor of the Christian Education Resolution submitted by T.C. Pinckney and Bruce Shortt.
It would have required Southern Baptists to create schools of their own in which their children could be educated in the love and admonition of the Lord.
But apparently too many Southern Baptist ministers didn't want to rock the public education boat because there are so many teachers and administrators in their congregations, particularly in small towns.

Leaders of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, by far the largest of the denomination's state groups, and officials of the Southern Baptist Convention both saw the vote as a moment of truth, a warning that dissatisfaction with the national leadership's attempts to consolidate power could become serious enough to someday split the denomination.

The Southern Baptist Convention voted yesterday to pull out of the Baptist World Alliance, accusing the worldwide organization of a drift toward liberalism that included growing tolerance of homosexuality, support for women in the clergy and "anti-American" pronouncements.
The Baptist World Alliance, which has a 20-member staff at its headquarters in Falls Church, is a loose, voluntary confederation of 211 Baptist groups with more than 46 million members around the globe.
It was the third year in a row that Bush has spoken to the Southern Baptists, and he urged them to lobby Congress to pass the amendment.

The Southern Baptist Convention passed it's 1st resolution to instruct it's organization and followers to attempt to convert the Jews to Christianity in 1867.
The goal of the Southern Baptist Convention in the 1990's was to proclaim the Gospel, and to attempt to convert everyone that was not Christian by the year 2000.
Their belief is invalid - after all, the Rev. Bailey Smith, at that time leader of the Southern Baptists, said in the 1980's, "G-d doesn't hear the prayer of a Jew." This is one of the worst forms of anti-Semitism, and is typical of the mindset that existed in Germany in the 1930's.

The Baptist General Convention of Texas is openly discussing a break with the national body, which this month rewrote its official statement of faith to disallow female pastors and two years ago called for a wife to "submit graciously to the servant leadership of her husband."
But there is a third choice, some Baptist leaders say: a post-denominational future in which churches pick and choose how they want to work with state or national bodies, without the powerful allegiances that have marked Southern Baptist life.
Texas Baptists also gave final approval to a change in their rules that will open leadership roles to representatives of out-of-state churches – a decision that some believe will move the state convention one step closer to creating a new national denomination.

That Southern Baptists treasure, respect honor and recognize the absolute authority of the Bible (and even worship it at times) is without dispute.
From 1865 through the late 1960s, the overwhelming majority of Southern Baptists "infallibly" interpreted the Bible to teach and sanction the racial inferiority of the Negro race which justified inequality and segregation.
In 1995, Southern Baptists officially apologized to the world and repented for their previous "infallible" interpretations in support of slavery and racism.

SBC conservatives defend the narrower language as reflecting the views of most Southern Baptists and as necessary to guard the denomination against liberalism, which they claim infiltrated seminaries and agencies during the 1960s and 1970s.

There's an excellent documentary called "Battle For The Minds" that details the takeover of the southern baptist church and the effects it had on of the members of the church.
While the article is interesting, I don't think it proves its thesis that there is some vast Southern Baptist conspiracy to turn the White House into some kind of fundamentalist clubhouse.
Odd that innuendos about dark secret conspiracies between Republicans and Southern Baptists are relevant to the discussion of religion affecting politics, but a far left, radical preacher that is trying to become an actual candidate - with the right to speak at the Democratic convention, and participate in writing the platform, apparently isn't.
