Armenia (Armenian: Հայաստան, Hayastan, Հայք, Hayq), officially the Republic of Armenia, is a landlocked mountainous country in the Southern Caucasus (Transcaucasus), bordered by Turkey to the west, Georgia to the north, Azerbaijan to the east, and Iran and the Nakhichevan exclave of Azerbaijan to the south.
Southern parts of Armenia remained under control of Kurdish dynasties of Shaddadids and Ayyubids.
Armenia is a landlocked country in the southern Caucasus.

The authors, having studied the present situation in the Southern Caucasus in detail, have reached the conclusion that use should be made of the existing historical potential of the European community in respect of resolving conflicts and identifying control mechanisms in a multi-ethnic state (for example Belgium, the Southern Tyrol and the Aland Islands).
The peoples of the Southern Caucasus are at the stage of the formation of a national consciousness and the construction of a national state, and are still a long way from the integration processes characteristic of the European community.

South Caucasus, also referred to as Transcaucasia or Transcaucasus, is the southern portion of the Caucasus region between Europe and Asia, extending from the Greater Caucasus to the Turkish and Iranian borders, between the Black and Caspian Seas.
In Western languages, the terms Transcaucasus and Transcaucasia are translations of the Russian zakavkazje meaning "the area beyond the Caucasus Mountains", i.e., as seen from the Russian capital (analogous to the Roman terms Transalpine and Transpadania).
The region remains one of the most complicated in the post-Soviet area, and comprises three heavily disputed areas – Abkhazia and South Ossetia in Georgia, and Nagorno-Karabakh in Azerbaijan.
