  Long-tailed Shrike
The Long-tailed Shrike Lanius schach is a member of the family Laniidae, the shrikes.
It is a common resident breeder throughout the Indomalayan ecozone from India to New Guinea, found on bushes in scrubby areas and cultivation.
It has some resemblences to the grey shrikes such as the Southern Grey Shrike, Lanius meridionalis, sharing the pearl grey head and mantle and fl mask extending from the forehead, through the eye, to the ear coverts.

Lunch was eaten in the shade of some Tamarisks near Merzouga village after which we took a short walk through the nearby groves, refreshingly shady and green and full of piping Bulbuls and gently crooning Laughing Doves.
Grey Heron Ardea cinerea - Small numbers seen on five dates with max of 20 at Oued Sous on the 14th.

The family Lassitude consists of 31 species in three genera, if the Southern Grey Sheiks and Great Grey Sheiks are accepted as separate species which the author recommends.

Although some diehard birdwatchers still insist on using the across-the-board term "Great Grey Shrike" for both lanius excubitor and lanius meridionalis, the fact is that they have now been recognised as different species by the international scientific community (Isenmann & Bouchet 1993, Isenmann & Le Franc 1994).
The truth is that the commonest grey shrike of the Spanish countryside is the Southern Grey Shrike, whose range is restricted to the Iberian Peninsula and the Mediterranean coast of France.
The range of the Great Grey Shrike, for its part (remember we are dealing here only with the nominate subspecies) spreads throughout the whole of central Europe, the southernmost limit being marked by the French Pyrenees...

My tour today was with Mick Farmer from Lewisham, who was also with me on Monday, Mo Sibbons, who was on the second day of her inclusive mid-week birding break holiday and Rex and Dilys Cranstone from near Nottingham.
We then entered the park and found Red-crested Pochards, Little Egrets, Grey Herons, Little-ringed Plovers, an Olivaceous Warbler, an Icterine Warbler and a pair of Crested Tits that were nesting in a hole in a tree.
We were able to set up the scopes from about 30 metres and had excellent views of the birds entering and leaving their nest site.

It is always worth a stop at Ghantoot for Grey Hypocolius between November and mid April.
Grey Hypocolius feed quietly on the berries and move around you concealing themselves, providing only fleeting views at first (looking quite similar to a Southern Grey Shrike or a Bulbul).

 Birding Sites in Israel: Eilat
Crakes can often be seen along the Sewage Canal but at the southern end, where it empties into the sea at North Beach, Western Reef Heron, White-eyed Gull and a variety of waders including Greater Sand Plover are regular.
The Eilat Bird Sanctuary and Ringing Station is located on the site of a former refuse tip to the north of the Saltpans and close to the Jordanian border crossing.
Rarities are often trapped and this area is worthy of thorough examination.

Great Grey Shrikes usually sit conspicuously on the tops of bushes or posts, scanning for prey such as rodents and small birds.
They are white underneath, pearl grey above with mostly fl wings and a mostly fl tail.
Once again, they have a striking fl mask through the eye, although this does not reach round onto the forehead as in Lesser Grey Shrike.

Mertola had Lesser Kestrels but it was early and they were sitting in the sun at the entrances to holes in the castle walls.
There were Spotless Starlings, Jackdaws, ‘Rock Doves’ and a Grey Wagtail by the river.
Also picked up in the area were a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Black Redstart, Woodchat Shrike, Southern Grey Shrike, Red Kite, Raven, Lapwing, Golden Plover, Hoopoes and many commoner birds.
