There is strong positive correlation between the warm phase of the PDO and increased discharge in the southern rivers, and a negative correlation with the northern rivers.

A new report by the CSIRO has found that rivers in southern Australia are being choked by a tidal wave of sand and silt.
The report found that more than 30,000 kilometres of river bed is being filled with sand from eroding banks, largely the result of excessive land clearing over the last century.
The situation is proving deadly for native fish, which normally live in the deep river holes during a drought.
