The Song dynasty (Chinese: 宋朝) was a ruling dynasty in China from 960-1279.
The northern Jin dynasty was overrun by the Mongols in 1234, who subsequently took control of northern China and maintained uneasy relations with the Southern Song court.
On March 19, 1279 the Song army was defeated in its last battle, the Battle of Yamen, fought against the Mongols in the Pearl River Delta; subsequently a high official is said to have taken the boy emperor in his arms and jumped from a clifftop into the sea, drowning both of them.

Song records describe detailed customs inspections at Cham ports, where one fifth of each commodity was collected for the Cham king before remaining goods could be sold.

Although it went through wars in Southern Song Dynasty, and suffered from discrimination as the remaining citizens of the overthrown dynasty, Hang Zhou appeared to be a prosperous and magic city in the eye of the Italian tourist.
There are still a lot of westerners at his persuasion who come to Hang Zhou, the place this Italian called the finest and most splendid city in the world.
