Southern Tang (also refered to as Nantang) was one of the Ten Kingdoms in south-central China created following the Tang Dynasty from 937-976.
Southern Tang replaced the Wu Kingdom when Li Sheng (a.k.a Xu Zhihao) deposed the emperor Yang Pu.
Southern Tang was conquered in 976 by the Northern Song Dynasty.

In Yunnan, although Nanzhao had been destroyed by the Tang, its successor, Dali, restored the independence of the region by 938 and survived under various names until it was finally encorporated into China by the Mongol Yuan dynasty (1206-1368) in 1253.
Southern Han continued to drive Chu back, and in 947, when Chu forces were weakened by turmoil in Hunan, Southern Han invested the northern portion of Guangxi, though the key to the river routes of the north, Guilin, remained out of its control.
Southern Han was fighting wars on two fronts in these years: in the north with Chu; in the south attempting to hold Vietnam until it suffered a major defeat at the Bach-dang river in 938.

The emperor, seeking to shame the wayward minister into exhibiting greater decorum, assigned a painter to attend the night-long parties as a secret informant, and to afterwards recreate on silk the untoward behavior he had witnessed among the officials present.
It is said that Minister Han Xizai, after being confronted with his misdeeds recorded in detail in the painting, disregarded this tactful reprimand and continued his escapades up until the fall of the Southern Tang to Song forces.
