The first ruler of Yan was Ji Shi, Duke of Shao (Shao Gong Shi 召公奭), an uncle of King Zhou Chengwang 周成王.
From the Spring and Autumn (Chunqiu) 春秋 period on Yan became stronger through the help of the advisor Le Yi 樂毅 and could defend itself against Qi 齊 and later against the state of Zhao 趙 during the Warring States (Zhanguo) 戰國 period.
The name Yan was often used for imperial princedoms, and for five of the Non-Chinese Sixteen States (Shiliuguo 十六國) of the north during the time of south-north division.

The origin of the Yan (also spelled "Yun" and "Yen"; and "Gin" or "Jin" as pronounced in the Toysan dialect) surname in Guangdong is traced back to a Tong who adopted the pseudonym while fleeing the Mongol armies during the war-torn years of the latter Yuan Dynasty, over six centuries ago.
One famous member of the clan, Martin Yan, master chef and host of the PBS television show "Yan Can Cook," was born near Canton, and owns a chain of successful restaurants in the United States.

Although Murong De tried to establish a functioning administration, time was to short for efficient elaboration: Southern Yan was soon conquered by the Jin Dynasty 晉 armies (some histories say, Liu-Song 劉宋, because the leading general, Liu Yu 劉裕, was the founder of this successor dynasty of Jin).
The Yan empire is named after the old feudal state of Yan 燕 during the Zhou Dynasty 周.

Please note that, despite its name, the Former Qin was much later and less powerful than the Qin Dynasty which ruled all of China during the 3rd century BCE.
The defeat of the Former Qin in the Battle of Fei and the subsequent uprisings split the court into two after the death of Fu Jian: one located at present day Taiyuan, Shanxi and was soon overwhelmed in 386 by the Xianbei under the Later Yan and the Dingling.
The other struggled in its greatly reduced territories around the border of present day Shaanxi and Gansu until disintegration in 394 under the years of invasions by the Western Qin and the Later Qin.
