Improvements to the Inoculation of Pea and Lentil Crops in Southern Manitoba - ARDI - Manitoba Agriculture and Food
For pea and lentil to take maximum advantage of their potential to harvest nitrogen from the atmosphere to produce a high yielding, high protein crop, they must be grown in the presence of an effective, efficient strain of Rhizobium leguminosarum bv.
Field sites (21) were located throughout southern Manitoba in 1998 where the field history could identify whether pea or lentil had been grown in the previous ten years and which brands of commercial inoculants had been used in previous pea or lentil inoculations.
Uninoculated pea plants were well nodulated in cultivated sites (including sites that had not been grown to pea or lentil in over 15 years), but were poorly nodulated in the sites that had no history of cultivation.

Although southern peas can tolerate drier soil conditions than most vegetables, highest yields are obtained when about 1 inch of rain or irrigation water is received every 7 to 10 days.
Southern peas should be planted in rows 20 to 36 inches apart, depending on the growth habit of the cultivar and your planting equipment.
Although southern peas and other legume crops fix nitrogen in small round structures on the roots called nodules (which supply part of the nitrogen needed by the crop, especially after the peas have started to flower), most legume vegetables will benefit from a small amount of nitrogen applied at planting.

Watch Your Garden Grow - Peas
Pea is a frost-hardy, cool-season vegetable that can be grown throughout most of the United States, wherever a cool season of sufficient duration exists.
The Southern pea (cowpea) is an entirely different warm-season vegetable that is planted and grown in the same manner as beans.
Peas may be planted whenever the soil temperature is at least 45°F, and the soil is dry enough to till without its sticking to garden tools.

Southern pea plants grow as vines, as bushes, or along the ground (prostrate).
Snap peas -- peas harvested while the pods are still tender and cooked without shelling -- are a type of cream pea.
Some good pea varieties are resistant to nematodes, but a better solution is to eliminate these pests by "solarizing" soil, or by planting cover crops such as annual ryegrass (fall or winter) or marigolds (summer).

Southern peas are one of the most popular vegetables consumed in the South and are grown in most home gardens.
Botanically, southern peas belong to the legume family and are capable of forming nitrogen-fixing nodules on their roots; therefore, little N fertilizer is needed for good yields.
Peas intended for the fresh market are normally harvested 50 to 80 days after planting depending on the variety and growing conditions.

Fall 1997 Southern Pea Variety Trial
In 1996, a fall variety trial was completed on nine different southern pea cultivars including several that normally require shorter growing seasons, bush type growth habits and erect pod setting.
The objective of this trial was to evaluate and compare southern pea cultivars for differences in earliness, yield and maturity.
This was determined by weighing the shelled peas after they were soaked over night in one liter of water, subtracting the dry weight from the soaked weight, dividing the difference by the dry weight and multiplying times 100.
