Soul music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Soul music is a music genre that combines rhythm and blues and gospel music originating in the late 1950s in the United States.
Soul music is differentiated from rhythm and blues by its use of gospel-music devices and its greater emphasis on vocalists.
Psychedelic soul was a blend of psychedelic rock and soul music in the late-1960s, which paved the way for the mainstream emergence of funk music a few years later.

 Southern Soul: Part 1: GlobalVillageIdiot
Soul was what you got when Brother Ray Charles changed the lyrics to an old gospel song he'd probably sung growing up in Florida and released it as "I Got A Woman" in 1954.
Soul was James Brown and the Famous Flames' "Please Please Please." It grew from the parentage of B.B. King and the Soul Stirrers, the Five Blind Boys of Alabama, Bobby "Blue" Bland, and Hank Williams.
Soul, to put it briefly, was feeling, the weight of history and hurt put in a time and place and pressed on vinyl.

Soul music was the result of the urbanization and commercialization of rhythm and blues in the '60s.
If their sound was sweet and lilting, it remained richly soulful thanks to the group's firm grounding in gospel tradition; they popularized the three-part vocal trade-offs common in gospel but rare in R&B at the time, and recorded their fair share of songs with spiritual themes, both subtle and overt.
When the soul era of the mid-'60s was in full bloom, for a period of three years James Carr was the maker of some of its mightiest music.

Southern soul, like its northern cousin, represented an attempt to urbanize rhythm and blues.
From very early on in their career, the Stones were interested in the new RandB being produced in the Southern U.S., which was bringing back a more gutsy, down-to-earth, gospel-tinged feel, as opposed to the more commercial fl pop represented by groups like the Drifters (though the Stones covered this music too).
Philadelphia-born Burke was one of the early Atlantic Records soul singers, paving the way for greats like Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding, though he never achieved their level of success.

At first glance, the differences between southern soul and its fraternal twin deep soul seem to be hair-splitting at best.
The primary artists working the sweaty side of soul's street often tended to candy-flip between the two styles, and while the pair of subgenres were virtually identical musically throughout their mid/late 1960s steak-and-potato days, southern soul always revealed less of a direct gospel influence than its deep soul counterpart.
As tastes changed at the dawn of the '70s, so did the mainstream fortunes of southern soul, which found itself overshadowed by the smooth productions of Memphis' Hi Records and the increasing popularity of both funk and Philly soul.

Soul was not restricted to the South and Detroit, Michigan.
Atlantic Records produced smoldering soul smashes in New York City—notably by Aretha Franklin and Donny Hathaway; Wonder and the Jackson 5 created some of the era's great soul records in Los Angeles; and in Philadelphia, Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff virtually reinvented the genre with the O'Jays and Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes.
Soul became a permanent part of the grammar of American popular culture.

 Chef Rick's Soul Food Recipes
Many people have asked me what “soul food” is. There are as many different opinions on it as there are people in the world, it seems.
The term its self first came into the language in the 1960s, used mostly by African-Americans living in the urban areas of the North to describe the foods that were their culinary heritage.
Soul food was the food they had grown up on in the South, the same food they took with them in the great migration which occurred during the Great Depression and lasted through the 1960s as many African-Americans left the South hoping for greater opportunity in the cities of the North.

The followers of Southern soul and Stax Records must remember that Guralnick’s definition of the genre of music is simple and technical.
One must note that, just because soul had its roots in fl gospel music, Southern soul was not just a “call and response” from the fl community.
And in the spirit of rhythm and blues, soul was another way to transcend the burden of life and the everyday, and for this reason, it is understandable that many of the producers, writers, musicians, and engineers were “white partners contributing as significantly as [their] more prominent—more visible certainly—fl associate[s]”.
