Southland is the name of New Zealand's southernmost region and is also the name of a district within that region.
The seats of the Southland Regional Council, Southland District Council and the Invercargill City Council are in Invercargill.
Southland is divided into two electorate seats, and is represented in Parliament by Bill English (for the electorate of Clutha-Southland) and Eric Roy (for the electorate of Invercargill).

Southland attracted 153,947 international visitors who stayed at least one night in 2004, compared with 151,125 overnight occasions in 2003.
Venture Southland tourism and events manager Kate Watkinson said initial TRC statistics released for 2004 reinforced predictions that total visits to the Southland region were expected to increase annually by 2.4 percent over the period to 2010.
Southland’s continued tourism growth comes despite the fact that the international visitor spend in New Zealand was $6.3 billion in the year to December 2004, down 1.3 percent from the previous year.
