The latest population projections estimate the Queenstown Lakes district is likely to grow to between 23,700 and 34,000 people by 2021, while at the other end of the scale Invercargill city could slip to between 39,000 and 49,100 in the same period.
Southland District Mayor Frana Cardno was sceptical about the figures, saying you only needed to look at the number of housing subdivisons being developed in the district to see things were in growth mode.

 Sweet rewards or stiff penalties for Southland Drivers
The checkpoints were part of the Southland District "Click it or ticket" safety belt project, an ACC initiative aimed at increasing restraint wearing rates in the area.
Southland Road Safety Co-ordinator Jane Ballantyne said surprise was a common reaction from those who received letters.

Southland school district's superintendent, Raymond Lasley, informed the board that at some point the school district would be forced to increase the school tax, but this was not the time.
Southland's operating levy is $3.07 per $100 assessed valuation.
The tax payers of the district voted to allow that amount to be raised by the board without a vote to $3.10, but Lasley said he did not think it would help that much this year and did not want to rush the tax payers to another tax increase.

 Southland District Council Says No to Fluoridation
THE Southland District Council policy review committee yesterday voted against recommending the fluoridation of district water supplies.
The decision, if ratified at the district council meeting this month, spells the death knell for a proposal that has been hotly debated by the pro and anti-fluoridation lobbies since May last year.
Chief executive David Adamson said the council would ask the Southland District Health Board for a new approach to combating a proven child tooth decay problem in Southland.
