Southland is a sparsely populated region with extreme natural contrasts.
Ranging from the extremely mountainous and lush areas of Fiordland to the plains of Southland at the southern tip of the South Island there is enough here to keep even the most ardent traveller enthused.
Southland is also the departure point to Stewart Island which is New Zealand's third largest island.

The Southland Plains is a general name given to several areas of low-lying land in the South Island of New Zealand, separated by the rise of the Hokonui Hills in the north.
To the northeast of Invercargill, the plains of the Mataura River and its tributary the Waimea River stretch inland as far as the town of Gore.
At their southern extreme they become the Awarua Plain, a large area of marshy land which stretches from near Bluff to the foot of the Catlins in the far east.

Until January 1, 1917, the Slaton-Sweetwater segment was operated as part of the Plains Division of the Panhandle and Santa Fe Railway, under control of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.
The Slaton Division merged into the Plains Division on June 1, 1971, and this district became the Fifth District.
The Plains Division was abolished and the Slaton-Sweetwater line became the Slaton Subdivision of the New Mexico Division on May 15, 1988.

The 7ha reserve, ‘Kingswood Bush’ is a valuable lowland forest remnant on the Southland plains that unfortunately has serious weed issues, Chilean Flame Creeper, sycamore, holly and elderberry.
In addition to the weed problems, the reserve received relatively low usage and was one of the DOC Southland Conservancy’s lower priority sites.
The Department had also at this time submitted a bid for funding from the weedbusters local initiative fund to do weedbusting at the reserve, this bid was successful.
