Southpaw Grammar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Southpaw Grammar is the fifth solo album by the singer Morrissey, formerly of Mancunian band The Smiths.
According to Morrissey himself, the title refers to 'the school of hard knocks,' that is, boxing, a southpaw being boxing slang for a left-hander.
Some have taken this a step further and believe Southpaw Grammar to be a concept album about boxing, or just the violence prevalent in modern society in general.

 Interview - Les Inrockuptibles, 1995
Back in the all-muscles rock on his new Southpaw Grammar, nasty and fighting but always groggy from a shifting past, he lets here the concrete origins of his ill-being come to light and, thus, reveals his extraordinary inspirations.
The first fruit from this energy, from this enthusiasm is Southpaw Grammar: an unplanned album, which has appeared as if by magic.
Southpaw Grammar marks, to an extent, the return of chaos in my life, like a new start.

But Southpaw Grammar doesn't rock as hard or with as much style as the rockabilly-inflected Your Arsenal -- instead, it's his art rock album, complete with strings, drum solos, and two ten-minute songs.
Of these, the winding, menacing "The Teachers Are Afraid of the Pupils" works the best, and it represents a significant change in Morrissey's outlook; instead of the children being outsiders, "the teachers" are.
Throughout Southpaw Grammar, the privileged are oppressed by their fortunes, while working-class toughs are celebrated for their violence.

 Southpaw Grammar
Welcome, readers, to the awesome iron elephant that is 'Southpaw Grammar', two very long songs, six jolly songs and a drum solo, all combining to make a record that sends prestension on a blind date with smugness and pretends not to notice when they don't get on.
As 'Southpaw' - a pleasant tune about a sad lad, for a change - goes into its seventh minute or so, one's attention slips into the garden for a fag and then UNG UNG UNG - for no reason at all some sod starts bashing away at a set of tablas.
Unfortunately, Southpaw Grammar can't match up to these two, and in fact is a pale imitation of Morrissey at his best.

Southpaw Grammar, Morrissey's fifth studio record, has a number of stellar song names--"Best Friend on the Payroll," for instance--but musically, adds up to just another indistinguishable mush of groaned haiku ready to be heaped onto the pile of other cleverly titled but otherwise forgettable releases.
Southpaw Grammar is an album that has it's share of brilliant moments..but those moments are like bright flashes rather than immortal blasts.
SOUTHPAW GRAMMAR is one of Morrissey's most rockin' albums and it's musically ambitious with two songs breaking the 10-minute mark.

Maladjusted - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The single reached #16 in the United Kingdom, making it Morrissey's highest charting single in the decade between the Vauxhall and I and You Are the Quarry releases.
Maladjusted was Morrissey's attempt to integrate the prog rock that he experimented with on 1995's Southpaw Grammar with the indie rock of his earlier career.
Still, the album reached #61 in the US and has sold 88,000 copies to Southpaw Grammar's 65,000.

Rolling Stone : Morrissey: Southpaw Grammar : Music Reviews
But what may surprise some is that Morrissey's new album, Southpaw Grammar, is his most powerful solo outing to date.
Actually, solo album is a bit of a misnomer because, like Morrissey's best work with the Smiths, Southpaw Grammar is actually a collaboration, his second record with producer Steve Lillywhite and guitarists and co-writers Boz Boorer and Alain Whyte.
"Southpaw" is a bittersweet reminiscence of that moment when carefree childhood turns into adolescent alienation – set in a nostalgic swathe of freewheeling psychedelic riffing that evokes the era when rock itself was on the cusp between idealism and cynicism.

 Maladjusted
That means an end to the extended instrumental workouts that characterized Grammar, but that's not to say Maladjusted is any less egalitarian, as regular co-writers Alain Whyte and Boz Boorer are joined by drummer Spencer Cobrin, whose "Wide to Receive" is actually one of the album's highlights.
Still smarting from losing a fortune to ex-Smiths drummer Mike Joyce in court, this is Moz at his bitterest, a mocking response to the cumbersome stinker that was "Southpaw Grammar" and his increasingly marginalised position.
One suspects on listening to this album that the last album, 'Southpaw Grammar' was sort of a experiment gone horribly wrong, and that 'Maladjusted' is a sort of snivelling apology.

You'll recall that Morrissey's last album--the hodgepodge World of Morrissey, released earlier this year--had a nine-minute version of "Moon River" that was so interminable you'd swear the singer and his band waited for confirmation that Henry Mancini was indeed spinning in his grave before they would agree to call off the whole thing.
Grammar begins with a similar 11-minute saga titled "The Teachers Are Afraid of the Pupils" that drags on like a schoolday without recess.
Although Southpaw Grammar isn't even close to being in the same league as Morrissey's peak albums Your Arsenal and Vauxhall and I, it does have its moments.

 Morrissey Biography
The ex-lead singer and lyricist of The Smiths (1982-87), Morrissey is condemned to have his solo work held up to the fabric of that band's opus and to the deceitful perspective of Time itself.
Faced with the New Year 1996 and Morrissey's recent convalescence at Aberdeen, one wonders if his sixth and most recent record, Southpaw Grammar, stands like Janus: looking back at his best works, or ahead to his artistic apogee.
Happily, the year ended with the release of Southpaw Grammar.

Interview - Alan Corr, RTE Guide, 19th January 1996
His uneasy relationship with the press has already been covered in Journalists Who Lie (he refuses to speak to the weeklies and grants Q an annual interview) and it's a theme that he returns to again on his new album Southpaw Grammar with Reader Meets Author.
Reader Meets Author is about a lot of middle-class journalists I know who think they have an understanding of the working classes and their fascinations, which they patently do not.
Even the kindest of these middle-class journalists noted that Southpaw Grammar seemed to have more than a suspicion of filler (complete with a two-minute drum solo), and covered ground that Morrissey had first picked over years ago.

Nude as the News: Morrissey: Southpaw Grammar
Southpaw Grammar inspires a wide range of opinion from Morrissey's legion of devotees.
More and more, Morrissey's recorded output began to lose all semblance of commercial viability during this period -- the artist loudly expressed his displeasure at the poor chart rankings of "Dagenham Dave" and embarked on a disastrous Japanese tour with David Bowie that ended in his being whisked back to England under heavy secrecy.
And although it probably lost him some fans on the way, Southpaw at least proved that Morrissey can still make valid musical statements when he really puts his mind to it.
