Well actually in the 2001 general election there was a swing to Labour of 5% and the Conservative vote fell here in Southport.
In Crosby constituency before 1997 Labour was in third place — because Labour supporters actually turned out and voted for the party.
General elections are a notoriously risky way of ‘sending a message’ to the prime minister of the day because there are often unintended consequences when people indulge in protest votes.

The constituency is bordered in the north by Ribble South, in the east by Lancashire West, and in the south by Crosby.

Southport was in Lancashire at the time but was dragged kicking and screaming into Merseyside in the early '70s as part of local government reorganisation.
Being a Councillor in the UK - although it involves a lot of work if you do it properly - does not attract payment at a level that makes it feasible to be one's only income.
