  English Castles - Southsea Castle
For the next 130 years Southsea Castle was again allowed to deteriorate, aggravated on this occasion by a considerable gunpowder explosion that destroyed the eastern section in 1759.
Demolition of Southsea Castle was proposed in the late 18th century to facilitate the construction of a more modern redoubt, but nothing had happened by the time of the next threat of invasion from Napoleon Bonaparte in 1804.
Southsea Castle had now been transformed from a redundant ruin to a key element in the defensive strategy for Portsmouth, and it maintained an important role throughout the Two World Wars.

It was outside the walls of Portsmouth and was used to camp troops from the 13th century up until the early 1800s, when the whole area was levelled and drained.
Houses began to spring up and Southsea soon became a seaside resort popular with officers returning from the Peninsular War, wanting sea baths to recover from their wounds.

In 2001, after a successful campaign by AKTER (Action for Kings Theatre Restoration) to keep the theatre open, it was bought by Portsmouth City Council and leased to the Kings Theatre Trust Ltd who took responsibility for the building’s restoration and repair.
This trust leased the building in turn to an operating company, Kings Theatre Southsea Ltd, who operated and maintained the building on a day to day basis and put on the programme of shows.
