	Southside Virginia
		Southside Virginia stretches from the James River south to the North Carolina border.
		Comprised of counties with some of Virginia's largest slave populations in the 19th century, Southside Virginia was also the scene of two important events during the Civil War.
		Largely agricultural, Southside is historically the state's major center of tobacco farming, while the southeastern section of the region is known for its cotton and peanut cultivation.

		The Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission is awarding an economic development grant to build an open access, redundant, fiber-optic network with routes serving the 56 industrial parks in the Southside tobacco region of Virginia.
		Southside, which has lost considerable manufacturing jobs during the recession, includes 22 counties and the cities of Martinsville and Danville.
		The report examined the telecommunications providers and placement of their fiber networks in the region and discussed a low-cost mesh-network design based on a financial model that could be duplicated in other rural areas of the United States.
