It would replace a twenty-four storey building, Southwark Towers, which was completed in 1976.
Another skyscraper, the Bishopsgate Tower, was submitted for planning permission in London and was originally proposed to exceed the height of the Shard by a metre.
Actual demolition of the current Southwark towers takes place in late 2006 and early 2007 ready in time for the tower to start construction in summer 2007 and ready for completion by the end of 2010.

Of course Tower Hamlets council have to find the time on their hands to approve it rather than Mr Patels new newstand sign but construction should start in 2004.
We don't expect this to be the last one of significant height given the insatiable desire of people to live in the city center there as a city the size of Manchester can certainly support several although these may be some time in coming.
You can expect a number of similarly sized residential towers to be proposed, the steady stream of them infact looks set to continue for several years.

I agree that the tower would be a stunning thing to look at but I also feel that it should be located with other sky scrapers as it looks silly to have them dotted all over the place.
In a few years this tower will be contributing to the history of Southwark and people will be complaining about other towers being built impeding their view of the LBT.
Better to have a beautiful 66-storey tower than an ugly 20-storey tower, which is probably what we'd get if this is refused because the developers will want to pack the same amount of floorspace in.

The entire premise of that article is that the tower fell in 9.2 seconds, therefore it was helped along by extra explosives or something (they of course don't have any actual explanation, just try to cast doubt on what really happened.
Claiming the towers wouldn`t fall that fast unless the building as demolished is flawed even under their own reasoning.
The collapse of the WTC towers has never intuitively made sense to me. I have an engineering background and was studying engineering at Stevens Tech in Hoboken on 9/11 -- I watched both towers collapse and had friends who worked in boths towers.
