Lake Pedder National Park was declared in 1955 the Southwest Fauna District was declared in 1962 Lake Pedder was dammed and southwest reserves were enlarged in 1972-74 and the Southwest National Park was declared in 1976, during the controversy over the Franklin dam (see Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park).
The Southwest National Park was listed as World Heritage in 1982 and enlarged to its present size in 1989.
It extends to the southwest coast, with beaches and bays and spectacular sea cliffs, arches, rock platforms, blowholes, dunes and natural harbours: Port Davey and Bathurst Harbour are in the park.

Zion National Park encompasses some 150,000 acres of wild canyon country east of St. George, Utah, including the narrow, multicoloured Kolob Canyons to the north and many miles of largely impenetrable mountain wilderness.
Overcrowding: As with other Southwest parks including Yosemite and the Grand Canyon, overcrowding is becoming a serious problem in Zion Canyon - the general solution is to reduce the traffic by closing some roads to private vehicles and using shuttle bus services to transport visitors.
Even so, in all these parks it is only a tiny section that is usually visited and always there are vast areas of wilderness that may be explored in peace.

 Arizona - Saguaro National Park
There are many densely forested regions in the Southwest but two areas of the Sonoran desert either side of Tucson have been selected and preserved as the Saguaro National Park - this was upgraded in status from a National Monument in 1994.
The Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument also has many saguaros, together with other more unusual columnar cacti, and is more remote and less visited.
