The first, known as Southwestern Bible School, was established at Enid, Oklahoma, in 1927 under the leadership of the Reverend P.C. Nelson.
In 1943, the institute was moved to its present facilities in Waxahachie, Texas.
In 1980, the rocky Mountain District voted to withdraw from the Southwestern Region and to remain neutral.

Southwestern Assemblies of God University is a coeducational, liberal arts institution owned and sponsored by the North Texas, South Texas, West Texas, New Mexico, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma districts of the Assemblies of God Church.
