  Ned's Nineties: 83
An album on which Brian Eno appeared in the nineties that was not U2, James, boring or some combination of the three.
Slowdive's second album was recorded after the fall, ie after Suede became the best new band in Britain and we were all supposed to be worshipping Kurt's stubble and Eddie's hair.
And then there's "Souvlaki Space Station," a dubbish track that maybe goes on a bit too long, but still has some great reverb heft and lift to recommend it, an insistent rising to the stars, up and out.

What the album doesn't do is maintain the experimental tendencies of their first three albums.
When you're listening to this album, you realize that without it there might be no My Bloody Valentine or Slowdive, and that is most certainly a depressing and disturbing thought.
Brahms is one of my favorite classical composers of all time, and I think that is in large part due to the fact that he is the refinement of the Romantic school into something Classical and timeless.

The album's closer, the acoustic "Dagger", may just be one of the most heartrending and honest songs Neil Halstead ever penned.
"Souvlaki" is Slowdive's best collective effort, funnelling the atmospherics of their previous efforts into a more cohesive package.
Not because it's a lesser album, but because it's the best at showing Slowdive in all of their radiant glory.

 Freeway Jam
Their 1993 album, Chrome, is in a similar vein, and produced the radio hit "Crank", but as the decade progressed, the band cleaned up its sound, pushed the vocals upfront, and generally toughened itself up.
It is a remarkable album; while it applies all of the shoegaze techniques of buried vocals, textured beds of discordant guitars, and percussive drums, it also owes some debt to the 60's, particularly to The Byrds.
A second album followed in 1994, but the band was utterly neglected by Warner Brothers, owner of their label Dali, and were uncerimoniously dropped into obscurity.

The album title, made explicit by the erotic playing card on the cover (a feature on several of his early album covers), is a reference to golden showers, further developing Eno's public persona as a sexually deviant adventurer.
Although he releases six albums in the '90s, attention for his music is short-lived, and many of these albums fall out of the public consciousness within a few months of release.
Given the mass rediscovery of his rock albums by a whole new generation of music listeners, a lot of people are curious to hear what he's come up with for the just-released Another Day on Earth.

For some reason we just decided that we didn't want to put an album out that had any tracks on it we'd released previously; we made a lot of work for ourselves, I suppose "Catch the Breeze" was actually the only song [that had been previously released].
After this album, however, the male/female harmonies were reduced, and Rachel's solo vocal performances became almost obsolete.

The lulling melodic undertow of the group's early EPs is present in subtle new variations on songs such as "Allison," "Machine Gun," and "Souvlaki Space Station," but Eno blurs the foreground and background, giving the album a pleasant, swirling mix that's never static or predictable.
This is an album just for any moment, when you miss someone play "40 days", when you are about to make love just play "machine gun", when you want to be happy play "Alison", and when you want to hear one of the best songs of all the history play "When the sun hits".

Troubles with U.S. label SBK prevented Souvlaki from being released anywhere near it's U.K. street date and U.S. dates with Catherine Wheel that had been intended to promote Souvlaki proved to be another incident of bad timing; at that point, they were playing in a country where their record wouldn't be available for months.
Souvlaki was finally released eight full months later in the U.S.; SBK tacked on four bonus tracks, including 3/4ths of the 5 EP.
Their marketing scheme for Souvlaki will undoubtedly go down in industry history as one of the laziest ever.

Not enough great things can be said about Souvlaki, Slowdive's magnificent second album.
The album is the high point of Slowdive's career, stylistically speaking; at this, the midpoint of their career, they were combining the sweet pop of Just for a Day with the ambient experimentation that would mark their third release, Pygmalion.
The result is a wholly brilliant album, almost on par with My Bloody Valentine's Loveless as the definitive recordings of the "shoegazer" genre.

While in the main, shoegaze music tended to be melodic as well as loud and textured, part of what set Slowdive apart is how much more both sweetly melodic and densely layered their music was compared with their contemporaries.
They hit their stride with Souvlaki, their second full-length LP, and made the most sonically ravishing and unforgettable album of their ilk.

Everyone sites Loveless as their breakthrough album--their earlier stuff was more poppy and cute unlike the slow and dark sound they're known best for.
Yes it is very hard to duplicate the Loveless sound, but thats not because of his guitar skills, its because of his skills in the studio.
That and the fact that the album has zero variety are the reasons I don't really like it.

 RollingStone.com: Jazz : Queen : Review
Jazz is just more of the same dull pastiche that's dominated all of this British supergroup's work: tight guitar/bass/drums heavy-metal clichés, light-classical pianistics, four-part harmonies that make the Four Freshmen sound funky and Freddie Mercury's throat-scratching lead vocals.
Anyway, it shouldn't be surprising that Queen calls its album "jazz." The guiding principle of these arrogant brats seems to be that anything Freddie and Company want, Freddie and Company get.
What's most disconcerting about their arrogance is that it's so unfounded: Led Zeppelin may be as ruthless as medieval aristocrats, but at least Jimmy Page has an original electronic approach that earns his band some of its elitist notions.
