Soviet submarine K-314 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
K-314 was a Project 671 Ерш (Yersh, meaning scorpionfish; also known by its NATO reporting name of "Victor-I" class) nuclear submarine of the Soviet Navy.
On 21 March 1984, K-314 collided with the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) in the Sea of Japan.
The resulting explosion killed ten shipyard workers and released large amounts of radioactive material, contaminating an area 6km (3.6 miles) in length on the Shotovo Peninsula and the sea outside the naval yard.

The list of American submariners who gained immortality with their feats of bravery and daring -- Dudley "Mush" Morton, John Cromwell, and Howard Gilmore, to name but a few -- fill the hearts of submariners everywhere with pride to be part of a brotherhood with them.
While today's submariners don't usually have the opportunity to be recognized for their bravey, the actions of the crew of USS San Francisco during her recent grounding show that men who go under the sea today are cut from the same cloth.

The Soviets moved tanks to the border and showed no sign of removing their troops from Iran by 2 March 1946 as agreed by them at the London Conference of the Council of Foreign Ministers.
Soviet rejection of this plan must now be viewed in the light of their experience of USA "atomic control" in the IRAN I crisis over Azerbaijan.
The Soviets who had paid such a heavy price to defeat Germany (one Russian in 7 was killed) saw this as a major threat and provocation, also a breach of the Potsdam agreement to "completely and finally abolish" German military structures of all types.

The midget submarines of World War II are a subject of enduring interest and author Paul Kemp looks at why the major navies engaged in their construction and then details all the types of craft that were built.
Known affectionately as "milk cows," these submarine tankers, which could not be detected once submerged at their secret refueling rendezvous, gave the U-boats the ability to double or triple their time in a patrol area.
This approach clearly demonstrates that the impact of the German navy's submarine fleet was so great that the study of the means by which the threat was removed has become an integral part of understanding sea warfare in the twentieth century.
