Soviet submarine K-278 Komsomolets - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
K-278 Komsomolets was the only Project 685 Плавник (Plavnik, meaning "fin", also known by its NATO reporting name of "Mike"-class) nuclear-powered attack submarine of the Soviet Navy.
When the Soviet Union revealed that the submarine used a single conventional pressurized-water reactor, these estimates were lowered.
Examination of the wreck in May 1992 revealed cracks along the entire length of the titanium hull, some of which were of 30-40 centimetres (12-16 inches) wide, as well as possible breaches in the reactor coolant pipes.

One difficulty in analyzing submarine accidents is that military services, by their very nature, are secretive, especially when it comes to revealing problems or accidents.
Information about Soviet submarine accidents during the period from the Bolshevik revolution to the start of World War II has been especially hard to come by.
The submarine is salvaged by the Soviet Navy in August, one of the few cases of a nuclear powered submarine being lost and later being salvaged.

Submarine History 1945-2000: A Timeline of Development
Allied aircraft were responsible for (or directly involved in) the loss of 433; surface ships, 252; mines, 34; accidents 45, submarines 25 (only one of which happened when both hunter and victim were submerged); unknown, 15, scuttled by their own crews, 14; interned in neutral ports, 2; sunk by shore battery, 1.
However, erection of the launching ramp and preparation of the missile kept the submarine on the surface for five minutes; therefore, a hand-off control system was developed, whereby another submarine, 80 miles downrange, could take over for the last 55 miles of missile flight.
The first submarine to utilize the potential of both the nuclear powerplant and the high-speed "Albacore" hull was "Skipjack" — officially rated at 29 knots, submerged.

 The Soviet Submarine Legacy
The history of submarines is a fatal one, and hundreds of sailors have died in them through normal accidents.
In 1972, two subs were towed home after lethal reactor leaks (the Soviet military joke that men from the submarine fleet glowed in the dark had a strong currency).
A fire on another submarine killed 9 sailors off Okinawa in 1980, and yet another influx of irradiated sailors into Soviet hospitals was noticed in 1981 after an undisclosed incident in the Baltic.

On 7 April 1989 the Soviet nuclear submarine 'Komsomolets' sank in the Norwegian Sea about 185 km southwest of the Bear Island at bottom depth of about 1700 m.
A Komsomolets Foundation has been established consisting of the Russian constructor of the submarine, a Dutch salvaging consortium and some environmentally oriented parties.
The goal of this foundation is to get international financial support for its plans to either salvage the submarine totally, to salvage the torpedo part or to seal off the torpedo part of the submarine.

Potomac Books - Fire at Sea
This book is the first complete English-language edition of D. Romanov’s vigorous defense of the people and institutions that built the ill-fated Soviet nuclear attack submarine Komsomolets, which caught fire and sank in the Norwegian Sea on April 7, 1989, while on its first patrol.
Romanov refutes the Soviet Navy’s claim that from the very beginning it had done everything to ensure that Komsomolets was well prepared for independent patrolling, that it had trained the crew well, and that the submarine’s personnel had performed capably during the accident.
Readers interested in submarine operations and technology, Cold War navies, Russia, and the dark side of personal and bureaucratic behavior will be thoroughly satisfied by this comprehensive study of what really happened and the ensuing cover-up.

 Raise the Komsomolets!
The Soviet nuclear submarine Komsomolets, which sank in the Norwegian Sea in 1989 and is resting beneath 1,700 meters of water, is quickly becoming not just a Russian problem, but a global one.
It is estimated that as early as next summer the submarine's two nuclear torpedoes will break open, each spilling 3,200 grams of plutonium-229 from their warheads.
Nearly 50 years of atomic testing on the island of Novaya Zemlya in the Barents Sea has produced only 100 curies of plutonium there; by contrast, the torpedoes of the Komsomolets contain 430.
