Sowerby Bridge is a small, friendly and relaxed town in the Calder Valley, at the confluence of the River Calder and River Ryburn, surrounded by the dramatic scenery of the South Pennine Hills.
Sowerby Bridge started off as a medieval river crossing on the way to Sowerby, a settlement thought to date back to the 10th Century, situated on a hill on the South bank of the River Calder.
Manufacturing in Sowerby Bridge had reached its peak in the early 20th Century, having clothed the British army in the campaigns against Louis XIV, Napoleon and in the Crimean War, and provided shells, maritime engines and munitions, caterpillar tread covers and blankets in World Wars I and II.

 History of Sowerby Bridge
The mills in Sowerby Bridge occupied a prime position in Upper Calderdale and by 1758 were operating as fulling and raising mills.
Although the canals continued to decline, (the last commercial trip from Manchester to Sowerby Bridge was in 1937 and the Rochdale Canal effectively closed in 1952) the town remained a flourishing local centre until the 1950s and 60s.
There are plans to relieve traffic congestion in the main street and the Sowerby Bridge Forum is an initiative between local business and community to improve the profile of the town under a five year regeneration plan.

The Sowerby Bridge Wharf area is being transformed, thanks to an exciting "Regeneration Through Heritage" initiative being managed by British Waterways on behalf of the Sowerby Bridge Partnership.
The Sowerby Bridge Wharf area is around the basin at the head of the Calder and Hebble Navigation and is bounded on the south by the Rochdale Canal.
Following consultations with Calderdale Council and the Sowerby Bridge Community Forum, which represented local people, it was decided that the warehouses should not be converted for residential use as this would take a valuable resource away from boaters and local people and would not have helped the local economic environment.

Staff at British Waterways are celebrating after their refurbishment project of two warehouses at Sowerby Bridge Wharf in Halifax won a prestigious national award recognising best practice in waterways regeneration.
The refurbishment was undertaken by the Sowerby Bridge Wharf Partnership, developed and project managed by British Waterways, who own the building.
The £2.2 million to fund the project was raised by British Waterways and Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council, with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Yorkshire Forward.
