Soxhlet extractor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Soxhlet extractor is a type of laboratory glassware invented in 1879 by Franz von Soxhlet.
The extractor is attached to a flask containing a solvent (commonly diethyl ether or petroleum ether) and a condenser.
The solvent is heated, causing it to evaporate.

 Franz Ritter von Soxhlet (www.whonamedit.com)
Franz von Soxhlet was the son of a Belgian immigrant.
Soxhlet earned himself a place in the history of medicine for his work on the sterilisation of infant nourishment (Säuglingsnahrung) in single portions, being referred to as the "reformer of infant nutrition".
Soxhlet is also known as the first scientist who fractionated the milk proteins in casein, albumin, globulin and lactoprotein.

 Soxhlet extractors (Bruce Hamilton)
The soxhlet extractor enables solids to be extracted with fresh warm solvent that does not contain the extract.
The extractor is connected to a flask containing the extraction solvent, and a condenser is connected above the extractor.
The solvent is boiled, and the standard extractor has a bypass arm that the vapour passes through to reach the condenser, where it condenses and drips onto the sample in the thimble.

To the far left is the vapor transfer arm which allows the vapor from the solvent in the round bottom flask at the bottom to be transfered to the condenser at the top.
Once the solvent in the soxhlet chamber rises above the relief arm, the solvent is returned to the round bottom flask and the process repeats itself.

We described the Soxhlet extractor on page 110 of The Compleat Distiller, but have found that many people find its operation difficult to envisage.
First of all, it should be made clear that a Soxhlet is used for extracting resins, heavy oils and resinoids, none of which are particularly volatile and so are not susceptible to extraction by steaming.
When the level of the liquid in the Soxhlet container reaches the same level as the top of the siphon, then the liquid containing dissolved compounds is siphoned back into the boiler.

The Gregar extractor was invented by scientific glass blower Joe Gregar and chemist Ken Anderson (both CHM).
In fact, the driving force behind the Gregar extractor's invention was a problem Anderson encountered while using the Soxhlet extractor.
The Soxhlet extractor carries out a series of cycles, with solvent vapor rising into the sample chamber, condensing, dripping over the sample and collecting at the bottom.

As the solvent in the flask boils, the vapor travels up the extractor, through the vapor tube, and up into the condenser where it is converted back into a liquid.

The Gregar extractor also eliminates many of the operational problems associated with the Soxhlet extractor and performs additional chemical extractions.
The Gregar extractor uses a porous glass "frit" instead of filter paper and replaces the cyclic siphoning action with a continuous solvent flow.
In addition, the glass device's arms have been redesigned, and two valves have been added that allow the Gregar extractor to perform extractions that are impossible with a Soxhlet extractor.
