  Strait
A strait is a narrow channel of water that connects two larger bodies of water, and thus lies between two land masses.
Straits usually lie on important shipping routes, and many wars have been fought for control of these straits.
That is, while straits lie between two land masses and connects two larger bodies of water, isthmuses lie between two bodies of water and connects two larger land masses.

In the north and north-east, the Japan/East Sea is connected with the Sea of Okhotsk by the Nevel’skoy Strait and Laperuz Strait (Soya), in the east - with the Pacific Ocean by the Tsugaru Strait, in the south - with the East-China Sea by the Korean (Tsushima) Strait.
In the coastal areas of the southern sea area the salinity minimum on the surface is observed during the second half of summer and at the beginning of autumn, which is related to the cloud-burst precipitation in the second half of summer and the freshening of waters brought from the Eastern Kamchatka Sea.
Synchronous variations of the sea level and tidal currents in the Tartar Strait and Korean Strait occur according to the law of two-nodal seiche which swelling occupies all central deep water part of the sea, and the nod lines are located near the margins of the given straits.

The water which exits the JES through Tsugaru and Soya Straits is considerably fresher than the inflow, but is nevertheless much more saline than the fresh waters found in the North Pacific between Honshu and Hokkaido, and in the Okhotsk Sea.
Outflow from the JES through Soya Strait is even fresher than that through Tsugaru Strait, but still retains high enough salinity that it is the major source of salt for the Okhotsk Sea.

Terrestrial Ecoregions -- Hokkaido montane conifer forests (PA0510)
The island faces the Sea of Okhotsk and is separated from Honshu by the Tsugaru Strait and from Sakhalin by the Soya Strait.
While the lowlands of Hokkaido represent a transitional zone between cool temperate forests to the south and subarctic forests to the north, this mostly upland ecoregion is situated in the cold-temperate and subarctic/subalpine climate zones (Ito 1975).
This ecoregion consists mainly of central highland area, Daisetsu mountain range, which is largely volcanic, and the eastern hills and lowlands under the strong influence of the cold Chishima Current, where the conifer line goes down to the sea level.

Most of the nearly homogeneous water in the deep part of the basin is called the Japan Sea Proper Water (Moriyasu, 1972) and is of low temperature and low salinity.
The properties of this surface water are generally believed to be determined by the strong wintertime cooling coupled with fresh water input from the Amur River and the melting sea ice in Tatar Strait (Martin and Kawase, 1998).
The LCC flows southward along the Russian coast, beginning at a latitude slightly north of Soya Strait, terminating off Vladivostok (Fig.2), and becoming the North Korean Cold Current (NKCC) after reaching the North Korean coast (Yoon, 1982).

Above the Proper Water, the TWC, dominating the surface layer, flows in from the East China Sea through the Tsushima/Korean Strait and carries warm water from the south.
The TWC separates into two branches which flow through the western and eastern channels of the Tsushima/Korea Strait (Kawabe, 1982a,b; Hase et al., 1999).
The flow through the eastern channel closely follows the Japanese Coast and is called the Nearshore Branch (Yoon, 1982) or the first branch of TWC (FBTWC) (Hase et al., 1999).

Secondly, the three straits (Korea Strait, Tsugaru and Soya Strait) are opened to investigate the seasonal variability of the EKWC according to the inflow through the Korea Strait and it is compared with the seasonal variation of the wind stress curl.

The Sea of Japan and Koreans
The Sea of Japan is a nearly closed body of water, surrounded by the Asian Continent and the Japanese Archipelago, shared by Japan, Korea and Russia, connecting with the East China Sea, the Pacific Ocean, and the Sea of Okhotsk through the Korea Strait, La Pérouse (Soya) Strait, the Tatar Strait and the Tsugaru Strait.
Koreans, however, claim that the name "Sea of Japan" is wrong and should be changed back to the East Sea, the English translation of the Korean name "Dong Hae," although it is located to the west of Japan and to the south of Russia.
They think the name after one nation is unacceptable, even though the strait between Japan and Korea is called "Korea Strait."
