On July 23 1980 Pham Tuan of Vietnam became the first Asian in Space when he flew aboard Soyuz 37.
In 1980 France started their own selection of astronauts, followed in 1982 by Germany, in 1983 by Canada, in 1985 by Japan and Italy in 1988.
In 1998 the European Space Agency formed a single Astronaut corps of 18 by dissolving the former national corps of France, Germany and Italy.

Viktor Gorbatko and Pham Tuan of Vietnam arrived aboard Salyut 6 in Soyuz 37, and returned to Earth in Soyuz 36.
Tuan’s 30 experiments involved observing Vietnam from space, life sciences (including tests of growth of Vietnamese azolla water ferns, with application to future closed-loop life support systems), and materials processing.Carried Intercosmos cosmonaut from Vietnam.
Returned the Dneiper long-duration crew launched in Soyuz 35 to Earth.
