Last Soyuz Ferry flight; ended the first phase of the Intercosmos program, which concentrated on placing citizens of Soviet bloc states into space.
Soyuz 40 was the last Soyuz Ferry and the last Soyuz spacecraft to dock with Salyut 6.
It also ended the first phase of the Intercosmos program by carrying Romanian cosmonaut Dumitriu Prunariu and Soviet cosmonaut Leonid Popov to the station.

 Soyuz program
The Soyuz human spaceflight program was initiated in the early 1960s as part of the Luna program that was intended to put a Soviet cosmonaut on the Moon.
The Soyuz spacecraft and the Soyuz launch vehicle are both part of this program.
As of 2003, Soyuz derivatives provide Russia's human spaceflight capability and are used to ferry personnel and supplies to and from the International Space Station.
