The Bridgend Valleys Railway Company was formed in 1988 with the aim of preserving the line which runs through the Garw Valley in the county of Bridgend.
The line is one of three which radiates from the junction at Tondu: The Ogmore Vale is closed and lifted; the Llynfi Valley branch to Maesteg was reopened to passengers in 1992; while the Garw was reopened for freight to carry screened coal from tips in the valley as part of a land reclamation scheme.

PLEG had brought 43 of it's members to the railway for the charter and it was disappointing to see only around 20 other people waiting for the first official gala train at 10.00AM.

The locomotive was also to have been a guest star at the Spa Valley Railway between Tunbridge Wells and Eridge in Kent for two weekends.
Hired from Andrew Goodman of Moveright International of Coleshill, Warwickshire, the locomotive and trailer - weighing a total of 102 tonnes - were stuck on the main road bridge for seven hours on Friday, February 26th, 1999.

Mallard at Spa Valley 2004   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-10)
The SNBR's Mallard went on a weekend trip to Spa Valley to run on their line next to main station at Tonbridge Wells.
Mallard was chosen due to the romulus not working properly and the line only being a short out and back line, the engine would not need to work hard (which with her injector problem at the time was essential).
On the Sunday Mallard was double headed with a verticle boiler engine, which was suffering from broken chain problems and failed to run the whole day, but we managed to get the important picture of the two of them double heading.

The Wealden Line Campaign is fighting plans by the preserved Spa Valley Railway to build a new station on the Eridge to Tunbridge Wells rail route, which was closed by BR in 1985.
The campaign has lodged an official objection with Wealden District Council to the railway's plans to build a 91-m long platform on part of the track at Harrison's Rocks, near Groombridge, on the grounds that it will make it harder to restore the line as part of the national network in future.
In the spring, the campaign was involved in a similar planning battle when the Spa Valley Railway wanted to allow a mobile phone installation to block half the trackbed at Tunbridge Wells.
