Space 1999, "Ten days that shook the universe was a "Festival of independent and community-based space exploration" held in London, Earth from June 18 - June 27, 1999.
It started with a protest against the militarisation of space outside the headquarters of Lockheed Martin.
This was also part of J18 global festival against capitalism which initiated a wave of anti-capitalist protests including confrontations as Seattle, Prague, Gothenburg, Genoa and most recently Evian.

Space: 1999 was the first attempt since the demise of Star Trek in 1969 at producing a large-scale weekly science fiction series, and the show drew a great deal of visual inspiration (and technical expertise) from the Stanley Kubrick classic 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The 311 residents of Moonbase Alpha find themselves adrift in space with no way to control their course through the interstellar void.
There were convincing portrayals of low-gravity environments, the protagonists flew down to planets in realistic-looking spacecraft called Eagles rather than "beaming" down, and they frequently went into unearthly environments which were highly hostile to life.
Space: 1999 helped fill the sci-fi void between the original Star Trek and its revival, and is fondly remembered by its fans, no less so even as the real year of 1999 recedes into history.

Space: 1999 was created by the Gerry Anderson team as a "sequel" of sorts to late-60's cult fave UFO, though the ties between the two shows aren't that evident.
Space: 1999, Season One, is an incredible blend of 2001: A Space Odyssey, the orginal Twilight Zone and Outer Limits with a little Solaris thrown in.
Space 1999 is a problematic series to categorize in terms of jumping the shark.

Both actors had it written into their contracts that they would receive a lion's share of the screen time per episode (with no less than an agreed-upon amount of time), necessitating the rewriting of several early scripts (and later created some awkward scene-shuffling when Catherine Schell was introduced to the cast in the second season).
To date, there's no indication that Space: 1999 will live on in any form other than a recent series of new original novels and reprints of some spinoff novels from the 1970s.

Year One (Series One) was sci-fi fantasy of the highest order and was an incredible blend of mood, music, amazing sets, props and model work along with fantastic, even metaphysical/mystical stories that didn't merely take you there but actually PUT you in the action amongst the wonder and horror that the Alphans were facing.
This of course made 1999 unique outside of perhaps MASH and All in the Family where viewers would continually recall tragedies or failures from previous episodes that would hang like a cloud over all future episodes giving the show itself a darker more pessimistic outlook.
Yes, Year One of 1999 is rather heavy viewing but in spite of this in 1975, as a 10 year old, I became an instant and life-long fan of the show while watching premiere of the first episode Breakaway.

Lighting played a key factor in creating the atmosphere; not every set was lit to the max, often the level of seriousness was indicated by the amount of darkness in a particular room.
Space - humor is difficult to write at best, and in this case the humor was often not funny, and even embarrassing to the point of making the characters look very shallow.
From the scripting, it was also fairly apparent that people didn't have a lot of idea where the computer was about to develop, and how they would function in the years shortly to come after the production of this series.

Simple, perhaps one of the most memorable things about Space 1999 were the incredible sets, all that plastic and neon lighting, it made living in space look so appealing.
There are a great many sites devoted to CG imagery of the Eagle space craft etc. but there don't seem to be many sites dedicated to Alpha itself and that's a shame.
