"Space Battleship Yamato" is the warp-speed version of television's first "Yamato" series, known in the U.S. as "Star Blazers: The Quest for Iscandar." This seamless motion picture features the episodic adventure's most spectacular battles, dramatic personal encounters, intimate moments, and the unparalleled suspense of an intergalactic race against time to save Earth from total destruction.
If the Yamato TV series was available in Japanese, I'd rate this as "get it only if you're a completeist." I've seen quite a few anime compilation movies and this one is by far the weakest.
And Dommel's desperation to beat the Star Force and destroy the Yamato even at the cost of his own life is confusing without knowing that he'd been sentenced to death and was pardoned by Dessler (Desslok) in order to fight one final battle against the Yamato.

: RevolutionSF - Space Battleship Yamato: The Making of an Anime Legend : Review
Telling the story of the Japanese WWII battleship rebuilt into a starship in the year 2199 and saving Earth from countless hostile alien invasions, the Yamato television series (spanning three seasons and accompanied by five theatrical movies) ignited the space-opera craze in Japanese animation from the mid-70s to the early 80s.
Space Battleship Yamato: The Making of an Anime Legend was directed by Tim Eldred, a longtime fan of everything Yamato-related who was also in charge of the background material (in both in the extras department and the booklets added to the boxes) in the Voyager DVD releases of the series and movies.
Until then, Space Battleship Yamato: The Making of an Anime Legend is absolutely a must for any fan of the franchise, and a very worthy addition to the DVD shelf of anime fans who are into the history of the field.

Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato: In The Name of Love (1978) was a feature-length animated film based on Yoshinobu Nishizaki's animated television series Space Cruiser Yamato (known in America as Star Blazers).
Its plot was later adapted into the second Space Cruiser Yamato series (aka The Comet Empire), which is a source of confusion for fans, since their plots overlap in large measure, but also diverge in serious ways.
At the opening of Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato, the human race is quickly rebuilding itself in the wake of the Yamato's victory over the Gamilans, and the space battleship's crew has been broken up, its members scattered to the now restored space fleet.
