 Space Future - Space Habitat
And because space is almost limitless humans are going to live there in vast numbers in the future - in other words, it will become a whole new habitat.
At that time space activities will involve almost every industry - not just the aerospace industry but construction and interior design, catering and drinks, fashion and music, sports and entertainment, advertising and law, to name just a few.
Living in space for long periods of time, or even permanently, is far more serious a prospect than merely staying for a few days or weeks.

Maryland Sea Grant: Chesapeake Bay - Sense of Place   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
The powerful sense of place that visitors associate with a historic site such as Gettysburg National Battlefield is routinely, often unconsciously, to argue for the special treatment of those "hallowed grounds." Places are frequently restored or preserved based on their (allegedly) unique attributes.
Although the academics and writers who introduced sense of place as a topic for debate thought of it as relatively static, something built over years and years, the realities of shifting populations mean that today's residents are likely to perceive place in an entirely different way than yesterday's.
Place attachment can be political, particularly in that it highlights or "privileges" the remembered histories of some people and groups, although not always those of social and economic elites.

The community is a representational space that encompasses the memory of a time and place, a fulfilling way of life and also a dream for the future.
Space, then, does not stand for anything, it is the development, play and interchangeability of signification.

 The Space Settlement Initiative
The settlement of space would benefit all of humanity by opening a new frontier, energizing our society, providing room and resources for the growth of the human race without despoiling the Earth, and creating a lifeboat for humanity that could survive even a planet-wide catastrophe.
Space claims based on anything less than settlement would be virtually impossible to justify to the courts and the world.
Although classic land grants cannot be used in space because sovereignty is prohibited, the objective of land claims recognition in space is the same as the objective of land grants on Earth: the use of property rights as an incentive to get private individuals to do something of great value to the whole society.
