The genre is Space 1889, a Victorian space opera.
This is a PDF character sheet for Space 1889.
The first is used in my game, since it roughly matches the description in the game book: a "1" is pretty poor, a "6" is as good as you are likely to see, and "3" is about average.

This game is a space opera one set in some unknown universe (perhaps part of ours, perhaps not) currently recovering from a war of sorts and dealing with the after effects of an army, trying to find out if the enemy really was defeated and general issues of surviving.
Space Opera, for those who don't know, is science fiction, with the emphasis placed on characters rather than ideas (soft as opposed to hard science fiction — Orson Scott Card vs. Larry Niven if someone wants names).

Not quite a game on it's own, it's aimed at supplementing one of the increasingly large number of d20 SF games (at least 6 by my count, with 3 more on the way).
There are two civilian starship crew/pilot types, the "Hauler", something of a space teamster (a bit weak, probably suited for NPCs), and the Smuggler, a Han Solo type (fairly close to the Rogue class).
The computer games that use this system have a similar problem - either they only focus on smaller ships, like Elite or Privateer, or in the Master of Orion series, which ships keep getting bigger and bigger, the really large ships are cheaper than they probably should be.

Lois is currently running a bebop style game and my husband is running a Dawnfire game and my friend Mawg is running a Cyberpunk game.

I'm tinkering with a short-run space opera game, and one component I want to get right is ship-to-ship combat.
Since space dogfighting can be run with essentially normal combat rules, I'm going to put together a Martial Arts package for starfighting (think Han Solo running from the Empire in ESB).
