 Songs Covered By Deep Purple
The intro to this song was often a tune-up time for Ritchie Blackmore after the abuse suffered by his guitar during the marathon work-out of Space Truckin'.
Not really a cover as I am not aware of anyone else ever recording this track before Deep Purple, but it appears on this list because it was not written by the group.
The song was credited to one Chester A. Powers (who was really Dino Valenti, later of Quicksilver Messenger Service), but the real composer was an obscure West Coast folk-singer by the name of Billy Roberts.

Deep Purple wrote some of the hardest rocking songs in the R&R/Heavy Metal library (Mandrake Root, Space Truckin, Child in Time), and so it's MHO that they should have employed them as orchestra pieces: overall, they should have rocked the whole time.
Deep Purple was the first band to note that heavy metal and classical music share a certain deluded grandeur and attempted to combine the two.
This is NOT Deep Purple nor was the experience I had listening to them in concert (Summer 2002) -Nashville.

 Deep Purple - Machine Head
An excellent version of the extended Space Truckin' (and great takes on other Machine Head numbers) is on the live album Made In Japan, one of the few Deep Purple live albums that the band themselves authorized.
Machine Head is a classic rock album precisely because it mixes its strongest material with well-written lighter moments in such a way as to be completely listenable from start to finish.
In the spirit of 90s repackaging, Machine Head was in 1998 as a double CD which featured not only the original album remastered with bonus tracks, but a second CD of Roger Glover's remix of the entire album.

Combining songs from the band's recently released Bananas album with a performance of the complete Machine Head album means plenty of excitement for both new and old fans.
Roger Glover also mentioned the possibility of discerning the Machine Head part of the show from the rest by showing a short film, but right now this is still in the planning stages.

Guitar Nine Records - Tobias Hurwitz "Painted Sky"
serves up some interesting cover tracks--a hard-edged, howling, instrumental version of Deep Purple's "Space Truckin'," George Clinton and P-Funk's "Maggot Brain" (with frenetic, improvised soloing) and a two-minute Bach piece ("Invention #8") with the dual guitars of Hurwitz and fellow G.I.T. alumnus Glenn Riley.
The CD is divided into five tracks of "faux jazz encrusted with genuine grooves", and five tracks of "genuine rock-n-roll soaked in funky sauces", which gives an indication of the dexterity and variety of Hurwitz' guitar abilities.
A total of thirteen musicians contributed to Hurwitz' release--a heavy release chock full of spicy guitar licks and subtle jazz influences--definitely a good listen.

Amazon.com: Machine Head (Dlx) [ORIGINAL RECORDING REISSUED] [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED]: Music
No fewer than three classics were unveiled here: "Highway Star," "Space Truckin'," and their biggest hit ever, "Smoke on the Water." Ritchie Blackmore's crunchy guitar was becoming the group's trademark, and the throb that opens "Smoke on the Water" went miles in concretizing his place in the pantheon of 1970s guitar deities.
Deep Purple were on the eve of breaking wide open when the quintet made Machine Head, a record that launched a heap of hard-rock hits, not to mention the bulk of the live album Made in Japan.
But the story here is the second disc, which is composed of remixes by Roger Glover that introduce long-dormant, more-energized variations on the originals and revive separate solos.

Fender Players Club - Ritchie Blackmore
The early '70s were the heyday of the classic Deep Purple sound, as they cranked out hits like "Space Truckin'," "Woman From Tokyo," "Highway Star," and the immortal "Smoke on the Water" from 1972's Machine Head.
As founder, lead guitarist, and co-songwriter for Deep Purple and later Rainbow, Ritchie Blackmore's guitar playing helped define the metal sound in rock music, going back to the late 60s and early 70s and continuing to the present day.
In '83 Deep Purple got back together and lasted for several albums with Blackmore until he quit again in 1992 to regroup Rainbow.

On tour in support of the album Machine Head, Deep Purple indulged in some great long-form jams, reaching into the 10-minute range for most of the main set and closing with the now-famed live read of "Space Truckin'." There's a reason this is regarded by many as one of hard rock's cornerstone live recordings.
Deep Purple& first studio album in five years has new songs that for the most part sound like their old songs, which is not really such a bad thing.
The album brims with trademark DP choogling; original members Ian Paice and Roger Glover remain one of the most solid, thunderous rhythm sections in rock.
