Looking Forward to a New Space Age
We dreamt of space, of moon colonies and Mars missions, great winged spaceships and the massive wheeled space stations that housed the new space colonists.
For it is surely possible that before the new century fades away on Dec. 31, 2099, we will have seen the light cast off by other worlds, tasted the air and frozen waters from the ancient martian soils, peered directly into the vastness of fl holes and alien solar systems.
And cherish those stories and images of the first, beckoning space era we crafted long ago and which were now a part of history’s shadow.

Space Age - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The space age reached its peak with the Apollo program which captured the imagination of much of the world's population.
Also, public perception of the dangers and cost of space exploration in the USA was greatly affected by the Challenger disaster in 1986.
The Space Age might also have begun much earlier, already on October 3, 1942, when the German A3 rocket, a precursor of the V-2 rocket program reached space, therefore becoming the first man-made object to enter space, albeit only briefly.

 Space Age Summary
Those achievements that made space travel sensible and possible generated amateur societies, private and government research programs, and military efforts that provided the foundation for the successful space age in the second half of the twentieth century.
The Space Age began on October 4, 1957, with the launch of Sputnik 1 by the Soviet Union.
The Space Age might also have begun much earlier, already on October 3, 1942, when the third A4 rocket of the V-2 rocket program reached space, therefore becoming the first man-made object to enter space.

The New Mythology of the Space Age, page 1
Though the course title was “Science Fiction and Space Age Mythology,” I have retitled it here to reflect the expansion of its scope during the last term I taught it.
Space Age mythology, unlike the mythologies of past cultures studied by anthropologists, is still growing and changing; furthermore, it is not a single view but a body of often-conflicting views held by different individuals.
As I use it, “Space Age” means our era, defined by the fact that for the first time in our evolution, human beings have ventured far enough from planet Earth to see it as a globe.

The Silver Lining That Is The Space Age
Computers were the logical systems of choice when the Space Age arrived with its complex spacecraft and rockets.
Thanks in large part to this need from the Space Age, we now have sophisticated computers that can be held in the palm of your hand with more power than every computer built before the advent of the first space launches.
The next time you hear about a space mission being launched, know that it is yet another piece of our lives and our future being dedicated by your fellow human beings who see the true value of space exploration for us all.

The landscape of civil space, the center of gravity for space development, the drive toward a working civilization in space, is no longer under government control.
As space infrastructure develops, so too does the culture of 'space people', ensuring people ready to transition to space, as soon as it is available.
Space development is no longer a burden to taxpayers, resting instead on the backs of creative capitalists.

Boeing: Integrated Defense Systems - Space Exploration - Space Systems Heritage
Today NASA, along with Boeing as a major subcontractor to United Space Alliance (USA is a 50/50 split between Boeing and Lockheed Martin), continues to operate three remaining space shuttles: Discovery, acquired in 1983; Atlantis, which arrived in 1985; and Endeavor, which joined the fleet in 1991.
The space shuttle is needed to complete Boeing's most complex undertaking in its history, the International Space Station (ISS).

The International Space Station, for example, flies at 7.7 km/s in one of the lowest practicable orbits, at an average altitude of 390 kilometres.
The farthest point of the orbit, 120 000 kilometres out, is within the tail of the Earth's magnetic shield in July but in January it is within the solar wind on the sunward side.
Crucial for Cluster's unique 3-D view of events in the Earth's space environment is that the satellites should be in a triangular pyramid, or tetrahedral formation, in a region selected for investigation.

 The Space Phase
What happened was that the "Space Age" was in fact a "Space Phase," the last era of an Industrial Age now as dead and past as the Jurassic.
Space has been trapped in the bloodless grip of bureaucratic-industrial zombies from that lost world, while the space movement has yet to find its way into the Information Age.
A Space Phase of the Information Age could look like that: a Spacefaring Web networking all levels of interest and participation, an industry of consumer-focused space companies, driven by creating and transmitting experience, opening an age of creative ferment in the technologies of living, working - and most especially, playing - in space.

What IS Space Age Pop?--Some Definitions
As a result, Space Age Pop is full of brilliant, bizarre, and exciting sounds, which are particularly striking to ears accustomed to the stereotypes that populate the more familiar genres.

Space Age Bachelor Pad Music, also called Space Age Pop or shortened to SABPM in this acronym-friendly age, actually spans pre-stereo "high fidelity" recordings introduced in the mid-1950s to the brief and unsuccessful attempt to push quadrophonic recordings in the early 1970s.

In July 1958, Congress passed the National Aeronautics and Space Act (commonly called the "Space Act"), which created NASA as of October 1, 1958 from the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) and other government agencies.

Cosmonaut Yuri Baturin, the flight engineer on space tourist Dennis Tito's Soyuz trip to the ISS, took Popular Mechanics to new heights - as it were - on his recent visit to the station.
It's also the beginning of a new space race, one in which the Russians have once again taken an early lead over their American counterparts.
Call it crass commercialism, or call it the savvy commercialization of space -- during a six-hour sprint on May 3, Musabayev, Usachev and Yuri Baturin turned the space station's crew quarters into a makeshift stage, filming commercials or conducting photo shoots for the four companies.
