The Space Review: Worthy of survival
Space was a vast, interesting backdrop for the stories and the characters, but the characters—even the aliens—faced essentially the same problems as we do today, albeit on a grander scale.
But today space is a niche activity, a discretionary activity that can be cut at the whims of a politician.
Astronauts have died, and space no longer represents the bold and limitless frontier that it was early in the space age.

Global Network - Space Power and Information Superiority
Under the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, as Oberg (nd, p.81) puts it, ‘warlike activities are forbidden in space and on celestial bodies, save in self-defence or defence of allies.’ Military surveillance, information processing and ground targeting from space could be construed as warlike activities or they could be condoned as defensive ones.
Space, like the oceans, is not being seen as an ecosystem, as a habitat, as part of the ecosphere.
General Estes III proclaims that ‘as stewards for military space, we must be prepared to exploit the advantages of the space medium’ just as the good Christian stewards of terrestrial space exploited the advantages of the earth ‘medium’ and ‘harvested’ its goods.

 space survival
Other health hazards of taking a spacewalk without a spacesuit, such as temperature extremes and exposure to intense ultraviolet, would not inconvenience you, as you would already be dead.
One of these occurred at the Manned Spacecraft Center (now the Johnson Space Center) when a test subject was exposed to a near-vacuum after his spacesuit sprang a leak in a vacuum chamber.
In the course of the EVA, the palm restraint in one of the astronaut's gloves came loose and punched an eighth-inch hole in the pressure bladder between thumb and forefinger.

Space colonization - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Space colonization (also called space settlement, space humanization, space habitation, etc.) is the concept of permanent autonomous (self-sufficient) human habitation of locations outside Earth.
Particularly in the weightless conditions of space, sunlight can be used directly, using solar ovens made of lightweight metallic foil so as to generate thousands of degrees of heat at no cost; or reflected onto crops to enable photosynthesis to proceed.
Free space locations in space would necessitate a space habitat, also called space colony and orbital colony, or a space station which would be intended as a permanent settlement rather than as a simple waystation or other specialized facility.

Survival is the most critical factor in human space exploration.

Rollercoaster-like rises and falls, which simulate the weightless environment of space on the aircraft, were a collective favorite among the astronaut candidates.

Chinese spaceship successfully completes its missions: report
Two previous unmanned spacecrafts which China put into space, the Shenzhou II and Shenzhou III, were also capable of manned flight, but the Shenzhou IV system guarantees astronauts' complete safety, the Xinhua news agency quoted Qi Faren, the spacecraft's chief designer, as saying.
The Chinese space programme, set up in 1992, is run by the military and is shrouded in official secrecy.
Compared with the three previous unmanned space capsules China has launched between November 1999 and March 2002, Shenzhou IV represents the country's most sophisticated and fullest preparation so far to realize the nation's long-cherished dream of manned space flight, Yuan Jie, director of the Shanghai Aerospace Bureau, was quoted by state media saying this week.

Space and survival - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Space and survival is the relationship between space and the long-term survival of the human species and civilization.
It is based on the observation that space colonization and space science would prevent many human extinction scenarios.
Engdahl states that the human civilization is at a Critical Stage, but that the funding for space exploration and colonization is minuscule compared to the funding for weapons of mass destruction and military forces.

The Space Review: Review: The Space Tourist's Handbook
The Space Tourist’s Handbook is designed to be a guidebook of sorts of the various space tourism experiences available, from zero-g and high-altitude aircraft flights to suborbital and orbital spaceflight.
On the practical side, the book advises prospective space tourists to bring along a digital voice recorder on their flights: that is much easier to use in weightlessness than a pencil and paper.
It is, after all, published by Quirk Books, a publisher whose mission statement states that the company is “inspired by the belief that a healthy appreciation for the absurd is the key to both happiness and success”.

Hardy lichen shown to survive in space - space - 10 November 2005 - New Scientist Space
Once in Earth orbit, the lid of the container opened and the samples were exposed to the space environment for nearly 15 days before the lid resealed and the capsule returned to Earth.
The lichens were subjected to the vacuum of space and to temperatures ranging from -20°C on the night side of the Earth, to 20°C on the sunlit side.
In space, the lichens turned dormant and did not metabolize, but once returned to Earth, they returned to their normal activity and their DNA appeared not to have been damaged, Demets told New Scientist.

 CNN.com - Black hole seen ripping star apart - Feb. 18, 2004
The rest of the star's gas was flung into the galaxy by the momentum and energy of the whole interaction, including by the radiation kicked up by the portion of gas that did disappear.
Kim Weaver, an astrophysicist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, said the scenario proposed by Komossa and Hasinger is not the only possible outcome for stars that approach fl holes, though it likely describes the recent observations.
In other cases, Weaver said, stars that are not close enough to a fl hole to be torn apart could be instead spun up to 60 times their normal rotation speed.

Maintaining a space outpost with the help of 15 other countries has proven difficult for the United States, both politically and technically, but as NPR's Eric Niiler reports, the station's international partnership -- though imperfect -- is crucial to its survival.
The International Space Station was first conceived in the waning years of the Cold War.
"A space station will permit quantum leaps in our research in science, communications, in metals, and in lifesaving medicines which could be manufactured only in space," Reagan said at the time.

Hawking Says Humans Must Go Into Space for Survival
HONG KONG (AP) - The survival of the human race depends on its ability to find new homes elsewhere in the universe because there's an increasing risk that a disaster will destroy the Earth, world-renowned scientist Stephen Hawking said Tuesday.
The British astrophysicist told a news conference in Hong Kong that humans could have a permanent base on the moon in 20 years and a colony on Mars in the next 40 years.
"It is important for the human race to spread out into space for the survival of the species," Hawking said.

You are not so much your atoms as you are the *pattern* in which your atoms are arranged." One example of this is seen in the "cutaneous rabbit" experiment.
