Character design standards - Space Characters
The no-break space is the same as the word space character with the added functionality of providing a way to prevent two words from being separated by a line break.
The following characters are word space characters defined in Unicode.
The majority of these characters are traditional typographic space values or characters that are related to other character's width criteria.

Space (punctuation) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Not all languages use spaces between words; the ancient Latin and Greek did not.
Spaces were not used to separate words until roughly 600 AD – 800 AD (see interword separation for more on the history).
Correspondingly, even more space characters exist in computing to combine the different width with different word-breaking properties in dynamic rearrangement of text.

Space character - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A space character is a character used to represent a space.
Space characters appearing in inconsequential places within element start tags in both XML and HTML are generally ignored by processors of those markup languages.
In most HTML elements, a sequence of whitespace characters is treated as a single inter-word separator, which may manifest as a single space character when rendering text in a language that normally inserts such space between words.

Character Sets: MARC-8 Environment (Library of Congress)
For instance, the SPACE character, which is expressed in binary notation as 00100000, is expressed in hexadecimal notation as 20, (also written as 20(hex)).
Graphic character sets may be represented by either 8 bits per character, or, where a larger number of characters needs to be accommodated by the character set, by more than 8 bits codes per character (usually in multiples of 8).
Escape sequences to designate alternate graphic character sets may occur wherever the alternate characters are needed, e.g., within a word, at the beginning of a subfield, or in the middle of a subfield.

 Character Flow Object Class
This is used by the flow object classes for mathematical formulae to adjust the spacing of the character.
If the nominal alignment mode of the font resource for the character flow object's writing-mode is not the same as the paragraph's alignment mode, then the glyph area is automatically adjusted as specified by the alignment mode property in the font resource for the specified writing-mode.
Character properties are used to determine the default values of certain non-inherited characteristics of character flow objects.

17.12: Space Threshold   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Many applications don't actually display spaces at the end of a document rather they simply move the cursor farther and farther away from the last non-space character.
Window-Eyes uses the space threshold value to know how far the cursor must be away from the last non-space character before it considers there to be spaces between the cursor and the last non-space character.
If you notice Window-Eyes saying the last non-space character in the document when you backspace rather than saying "space" try adjusting the space threshold value to compensate for this behavior.

The TI run-time environment adds double-byte space characters to the end of the string until all characters in the PIC G formatted string are filled.

PageStream never spaces characters or words closer than the minimum values, but it may exceed the maximum values if there is no other way to justify the text.
When typing these characters successively, PageStream can automatically insert the corresponding ligature, but it will not actually replace it in the text, so you can edit, spell check and search the text as if the ligatures were individual characters.

Dave Korn - RE: grep weirdness - matching space character
The dots are eating the '94' as well as the space.
If you use the three dots to eat the two digits as well as the space, the optional any-number-of-d's is matched by the zero d's following, and then the trailing 'items succeeded' matches.
Whereas with only the one dot, the dot matches the space, then there's zero-optional-'d's, then the '9' fails to match against '.items succeeded'.

There are also special characters that don't manifest in writing at all, but are rather just exist in order to convey instructions to a mechanical device (tab, line feed, carriage return, and form feed characters, for example) or to provide hints for interpreting or rendering subsequent characters.
Unicode allows certain encoded characters to be combined in sequences in order to represent abstract characters that may or may not have other encoded character representations.
The term character entity is not defined by the XML spec, but since character reference and entity have definite meanings, one can infer that a character entity is a general entity that has a single character as its replacement text.

Character entity references in HTML 4
A character entity reference is an SGML construct that references a character of the document character set.
The character entity references in this section produce characters that may be represented by glyphs in the widely available Adobe Symbol font, including Greek characters, various bracketing symbols, and a selection of mathematical operators such as gradient, product, and summation symbols.
The character entity references in this section are for escaping markup-significant characters (these are the same as those in HTML 2.0 and 3.2), for denoting spaces and dashes.

Increasing the amount of open space within the populated sections of the county will enhance the recreation opportunities of residents and lessen the environmental impacts of dense development.

In this example, the internal MD command treats the use of the space character differently depending on the command interpreter used.
Command.com in Windows 95 does not allow the spaces, while Cmd.exe in Windows NT (and later) treats the spaces as delimiters and processes the command by treating each word after the command as a separate parameter.
Note that in each case, the interpreter does not create a long file name or long folder name that includes spaces without the use of quotation marks.
