Spacehog: Live in Concert, 2/20/98 (NY Rock)
Spacehog – currently known in media circles as the band that fell to earth – has taken up where Ziggy Stardust left off.
With a sound reminiscent of Queen, early David Bowie and other '70s bands, the live Spacehog is as theatrical as its predecessors, but their music definitely does not fall under the category of art rock.
Royston breathed fire into Spacehog staples like "Candyman," "Space Is the Place," "Cruel to Be Kind," and "Spacehog" (the band's eponymous theme from Resident Alien), and grooved on the newer material with songs like "Mungo City," "Carry On," and "Almond Kisses" (sung by R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe on the album).

Spacehog's existence has been rocky, at best, though it's safe to say that they are one of the most underrated, under appreciated bands in rock today.
The Hogyssey has Spacehog evolving (a pun I'm sure Roy and Ant want us to smile at) once again, taking all that was good from their previous releases and taking a deliberate step forward.
Of course Spacehog has its comeback anthem - I Want To Live, as well as two or three radio-ready tunes (Ant It Is and Perpetual Drag come to mind) poised hopefully to lead them back into the limelight and hopefully grab themselves a more mainstream fan base.

In Music We Trust - Spacehog: The Hogyssey
As much as I wanted to hate this album, the one-hit wonders Spacehog are back with another collection of guitar-driven pop music lit up with hooks galore, fiery melodies, and plenty to bounce around too.
This is a Brit-pop album that relies on rock more than pop, but isn't afraid to show its roots in AM pop music.
And though mainstream America has all but forgotten this band, The Hogyssey is an example of why, if given the chance, this 70's arena rock gone pop band might just find themselves basking in the Glam of their rock and stardom once again.

Though all the band members hailed originally from Leeds, England, the band was formed in New York City in 1994 when Antony Langdon met Cragg by chance, in a café where Cragg had a job killing rats.
In 2002, Spacehog quietly broke up and the band members went their separate ways.

Immediately upon listening one senses that Spacehog have clung tightly to their love for the music of the past, Bowie and Bolan especially, as hints of Ziggy Stardust and T. Rex reside in nearly every note.
But just as clear is the fact that the band have cleared away a lot of the fog, resulting in a more polished sound compared to their past albums, which always had an unfinished quality amidst their wall-of-sound production.
Spacehog appear to be making a big play with this one, possibly a last ditch as album sales wain.

The year was 1995 when Spacehog hit the world with their silver-bullet hit, "In the Meantime".
On their third release, The Hogyssey, Spacehog confirms suspicions that while they may not have been on another planet for the past several years, they appear unaware that the musical world has evolved.

For their third full-length effort, Spacehog stayed close to the Bowie/T. Rex sound that made their 1996 debut Resident Alien such a hit.
At any other time, the group's glitzy revival of Bowie, Roxy and Mott the Hoople would have earned kudos, but it arrived at the height of Brit-pop, when other, more celebrated (and, frankly, better) bands were dominating the media spotlight.
British but based in New York, Spacehog's publicity material would have you believe the group resurrects the glam heyday of vintage Bowie and Mott the Hoople (even disingeniously referring to them as "the band who fell to earth").

Spacehog, the British glam band with the New York sound, played a blaring, loud show at Summerfest Sunday night, and to put it simply, they rocked.
In their third show in five years at Summerfest, Spacehog hit the road to promote their new album, "The Hogyssey." As tight as ever, the four guys from Leeds played most of the CD, only two tracks from the sophomore effort, "The Chinese Album" and a bunch of tunes from their debut album, "Resident Alien."
But as always, Spacehog played the part of rock stars, and Royston interrupted the show to sing "Happy Birthday" to his supermodel finance, Liv Tyler.

So, when it came time to deliver their second record, Spacehog knew they had to make a big splash, and The Chinese Album delivers on that promise.
A faux song cycle layered with details and hooks, The Chinese Album is a big album conceptually, but the band doesn't quite have the gravity required to make it the sweeping achievement they desire.
There are quite a few of those moments on The Chinese Album, but the band is occasionally derailed by underdeveloped hooks and ill-fitting humor (their foray into music-hall stumbles).
