  SONIC BOOM - SPACEMEN 3
Formed in 1982 in the town of Rugby by Pete Kember (Sonic Boom) and Jason Pierce, Spacemen 3 were to become one of the most important bands of the eighties, with their offshoots destined to spread out and become equally as vital in the nineties.
Those shows were the last Spacemen 3 would ever play, as by now the tension between Sonic and Jason were so great that couldn't even communicate with each other.
It was a sad end for "one of the most mind-altering, music expanding British bands of the last 20 years", but the legacy they leave behind is so fine, that we simply have to be grateful that they ever graced us with their presence at all.

Spacemen 3 and The Jesus and Mary Chain were the godfathers of the shoegazer and drone-rock scene which blossomed in the U.K. at the close of the '80s.
Sonic Boom assembled the group in 1982 but Spacemen 3 (which was always a quartet, not a trio) remained relative unknowns for the next few years, which they spent rehearsing, playing small venues around their native Rugby, England, and developing their patented distortion-heavy drone-psych approach to extended jamming.
The last album, Recurring, works less as a Spacemen 3 album and more as a preview of the interesting work the group's two principal members would pursue in the '90s.

Too, the Spacemen spawned a handful of subsequent ensembles that have elaborated and refined the S3 vision to arrive, at the tail end of 1996, intact and aiming to blow minds even further.
Spacemen 3 had its beginnings around the tail end of 1982 in the spacious attic bedroom of Tim Morris, who'd been in Noise On Independent Street with Bain.
In early '87, Spacemen 3 assembled at Rugby's VHF Studios to record what would be their classic LP.

Sonic Boom and Spectrum: Songs the Spacemen Taught Us Back in the late '80s, Spacemen 3 were the coolest band in the world, with their pristine vision blending '60s garage, techno-ambient, Velvet-MC5 grind, and heroic pro-psychedelic rhetoric.
Almost every important band that has emerged since their heyday has cited Spacemen 3 as a primary inspiration: this is one of THE influential bands of all time.
Billed as Sonic Boom and Spectrum in a Tribute to Spacemen 3, it is as close as we are likely to see to a reunion of the original band; and in addition, there will be songs from the Spectrum catalog and other surprises.

Spacemen 3 were psychedelic in the loosest sense of the word; their guitar explorations were colorfully mind-altering, but not in the sense of the acid rock of the '60s.
Though this approach was challenging, often bordering on the avant-garde, Spacemen 3 nevertheless gained a dedicated cult following.
In 1982, Sonic Boom (guitar, organ, vocals; born Pete Kember on November 19, 1965) and Jason Pierce (guitar, organ, vocals; also born November 19, 1965) formed Spacemen 3 in Rugby, Warwickshire, England.

Instead, the band developed its own minimalistic psychedelia, relying on heavily distorted guitars to clash and produce their own harmonic overtones; frequently, they would lead up to walls of distortion with overamplified acoustic guitars and synths.
Spacemen 3's second album, 1987's The Perfect Prescription, was the first to capture the group's distinctive style.
Shortly after the release of Recurring, Spacemen 3 split, and Spiritualized became Pierce's full-time band, eventually earning a cult following of its own.

For the majority of its six-year career, of which 1988’s ‘Playing With Fire’ is the approximate midpoint, the British trio Spacemen 3 pursued its sound-for-sound’s-sake obsessions in near-total oblivion.
Spacemen 3 featured guitarists/keyboardists Pete “Sonic Boom” Kember and Jason “Spaceman” Pierce, who later formed Spectrum and Spiritualized, respectively.
The commercially and critically successful ’90s work of these two sonic iconoclasts earned much more interest than the material of Spacemen 3 did during its 1985-1991 lifespan.

Minimalist walls of distorted guitars and keys were played with fanatic simplicity, letting the chaos produced lead to harmonies of its own accord.

Spacemen 3’s second album is a remarkable departure from the band’s 1986 debut, ‘Sound Of Confusion’.
Reduced to a trio (guitarists/keyboardists Pete “Sonic Boom” Kember, Jason “Spaceman” Pierce, and bassist Pete Bassman) following the departure of the first album’s drummer, Spacemen 3 makes an asset out of the newfound lack of percussion, giving ‘Perfect Prescription’; a considerably less rock-oriented sound with much more open space in its varied, subtle arrangements.

Spacemen fans will rejoice at this double disc set of Spacemen 3 demos, alternate versions and completely unreleased tunes.
Gathering together mostly tracks from the Perfect Prescription period of the band, many of these songs feature overdubs and effects later removed from the final mix in favor of a more stripped-down sound.
The Forged Prescriptions artwork reproduces the psychedelic spirals motifs and text font design that graced the sleeve of Perfect Prescriptions, using an alternate picture of Kember and co-hort Jason Pierce.

Sonic Boom's liner notes from the 1994 reissue in many ways capture the whole point of Spacemen 3's full-length debut: "[It] was basically an exorcism for us of our early material...we began our discography with an equal nod to our influences and our inspirations." Indeed, calling Sound of...
Three of its seven songs are cover versions -- "Rollercoaster" by the 13th Floor Elevators, "Mary Anne" by Juicy Lucy, and the Stooges' "Little Doll" -- while the originals are at once very much Spacemen 3 songs and clear distillations of everything the band members were tripping out on at the time.
Though Sonic and Pierce later expressed a preference for the takes included on the Taking Drugs to Make Music bootleg, the rough garage energy throughout still makes Sound of Confusion a fine listen, if nowhere near as stunning as where the band would later go.
