Spacewatch is a project at the University of Arizona that specializes in the study of minor planet s, and including various types of asteroid s and comet s.
Spacewatch discovered a moon of Jupiter, now named Callirrhoe, which was originally mistaken for an asteroid.
The Spacewatch Project The primary goal of Spacewatch is the study of statistics of comets and asteroids in order to investigate the collisional evolution of the solar system.

The asteroid appeared in images taken by Spacewatch astronomer Miwa Block with the 0.9-meter telescope at 1:49 UT on Jan. 19, which is 6:49 p.m.
Spacewatch operates 1.8-meter and 0.9-meter CCD-equipped telescopes on Kitt Peak, about 45 miles southwest of Tucson, Ariz. The project studies solar system dynamics through the movements of asteroids and comets.
The Spacewatch Project was begun in 1980 at the UA Lunar and Planetary Laboratory.

Lost Albert From 1911 Is Registered As Asteroid 719
Spacewatch covers a relatively small area of sky, but it sees very faint objects farther out into the solar system than do other such surveys.
The primary goal is to explore the various populations of small objects in the solar system and to study the statistics of asteroids and comets to better understand the dynamical evolution of the solar system.
Spacewatch also finds potential targets for space missions, provides astrometric support for spacecraft mission planning, and finds objects that might present a hazard to the Earth.

Earth Changes TV - Asteroid Found by Spacewatch Is Fastest Spinning Solar System Object
Whirling at that speed and given its size, 1998 KY26 has to be a strong, single chunk of rock that was sent reeling from its parent asteroid in some space collision, said James V. Scotti, a senior research specialist at the UA Lunar and Planetary Laboratory (LPL) and a co-author of the Science paper.
LPL Professor Tom Gehrels, Spacewatch co-founder, discovered asteroid 1998 KY26 on May 28, 1998, using the 0.9 meter (36-inch) Spacewatch telescope at Kitt Peak, Ariz. Six nights later Scotti, joined at the Spacewatch telescope by Dan Durda, took 111 images of the asteroid, measuring its minimum to maximum changes in brightness.
Spacewatch is funded by NASA, the University of Arizona and private donors.

Using funds provided by the Paul G. Allen Charitable Foundation, Spacewatch is inviting participation in the FMO review process by individuals wishing to contribute to the scientific community's knowledge of small close-approaching NEAs.

Spaceflight Now | Breaking News | New asteroid-searching telescope makes its first find
Spacewatch astronomers led by Tom Gehrels and Robert McMillan have used a 36-inch (0.9-meter) UA telescope on Kitt Peak to electronically scan the skies for asteroids throughout the solar system since 1984.
The new 72-inch Spacewatch telescope captured its first light from an asteroid, asteroid 2000 RD 53, on Sept. 14.
The venerable 36-inch Spacewatch telescope, which was originally sited on the UA campus in 1921, moved to Kitt Peak in 1962.

After dinner Ron and Larry accompanied Jim to the Spacewatch telescope where he was getting started on his second night of six in a row using the 36" Newtonian equipped with a super-cooled CCD camera.
It was moved from the Arizona University campus for use by Spacewatch and later the drive was upgraded from the old pendulum drive to a servo motor drive.
As Jim Scotti said it is impossible to really do anything about most of the natural disasters we face, like hurricanes, tornadoes, and earthquakes, but earth impacting asteroids and comets are predictable and there is a possibility we could do something to save lives and avoid disaster.

Today, thanks to the pioneering asteroid survey Spacewatch and similar projects, our planetary system appears as a humming hive populated with countless asteroids circling the sun like a swarm of bees.
Jeffrey Larsen, a principal research specialist with the Spacewatch group at the University of Arizona (UA) Lunar and Planetary Laboratory in Tucson, and his undergraduate students recently used the 80-year-old, 36-inch Spacewatch telescope on Kitt Peak in discovering dim Centaur asteroids and Trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs).

The authors, besides Cornell's Bottke, are astronomers with the Spacewatch group at the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory and at the Observatoire de la CÙte d'Azur in Nice, France.
Using a statistical technique to compensate for the big gaps, Spacewatch astronomers were able to calculate the total number of NEAs but not their approximate location.
To obtain the orbits of the undetected NEAs, Spacewatch astronomers combined their NEA population estimates with theoretical models, produced by the Cornell and Nice researchers, which show how asteroids in the main belt are transported to the near-Earth environment.
