  Spadina (ttc)
Spadina is a station on the Yonge-University Spadina and Bloor-Danforth lines of the subway system in Toronto, Canada.
Spadina station consists of two separate sections, one for each line, at the same level and 150 metre s apart.
Therefore, it is not recommended to change between the two lines here unless the trip is from a station on the Spadina branch of the Yonge-University Spadina line to a TTC station west of Spadina on the Bloor-Danforth line, or vice versa.

I think it's interesting that the TTC is considering have to raise fares (again) to make up shortcomings in the budget without addressing the overcrowding problems but yet find money to spend on replacing bus shelters with ones that have a more modern look.
The TTC needs to address the problem of backpacks, which increase a person's space requirement by up to a half in the standing room on trains and buses.
I'm a regular TTC user, and the subway crowd is minimal compared to other cities in the U.S. We in Toronto have it pretty good for public transportation.

The assets and liabilities of the TTC and four independent bus lines operating in the suburbs were acquired by the Commission.
The TTC continues to be the sole provider of public transit within the City of Toronto, as well as operating contracted services into the neighbouring York Region.
Because the TTC has maintained a large portion of its pre-World War II streetcar system, the streetcar routes operate in prewar style, with almost all of the route mileage in traffic rather than on reserved track.

 510 Spadina (ttc)
When a new dedicated right-of-way opened in 1997, extending the track north along Spadina Avenue from Queen's Quay to Spadina station on the Bloor subway, the whole route was renamed '''510 Spadina''', replacing the '''77 Spadina''' bus altogether.
Published TTC documents also indicate that the route, which with buses was city's best economic performer and one of only seven routes turning a profit, now operates at a considerable deficit.
Streetcars enter underground subway stations at Union and Spadina TTC stations, and a dedicated underground streetcar station at Queen's Quay-Ferry Docks.

All of the TTCs streetcar routes run through downtown in mixed traffic except for the 509 and 510 routes which were built in phases since 1990 and are separated from street traffic by a private right of way.
Streetcars for Toronto put pressure on the TTC to reconsider its decision arguing that the streetcars still were the most efficient means of transportation and should be kept.

Toronto Transit Commission - The Fall Edition -
While the TTC continued to plan and build its streetcar-based Scarborough LRT line (it was planned that out of the initial order of 196 CLRVs, 22 would be used on the Scarborough line, either individually, or coupled together into MU trains), the Province went it alone in designing the ICTS vehicle.
If the TTC had gone this route, trains to Keele at St. George and Woodbine at Bay would be on the same level, and passengers wouldn’t have to wait between levels in order to be sure to catch the first train to their destination.
This situation did not remain, however, as declining ridership and the cost of serving the low-density suburbs pushed the TTC into deficit, but even as the City was providing subsidy for the construction of the University subway, there was no pressure to move the Bloor line back onto Queen.

Spacing Wire • understanding the urban landscape » Spadina Streetcar Operating Below Full Potential?
In discussing the TTC’s proposal for multiple-unit operation, transit activist Steve Munro notes that coupling two streetcars together as a means of improving a line’s reliability only works when headways on that line are very tight.
In his view, only Spadina justifies the possible use of multiple-unit streetcars, and that’s negated by the fact that both Union station and Spadina station are unable to handle such trains.
Spadina streetcars carry far more passengers along Spadina Avenue than the competing car traffic, and it’s time that they were given the priority they deserve.

Transit Toronto - Content: Art on the TTC
Whereas the Spadina artworks were installed when the line was built, those on the Yonge line appeared one by one, through donations or new construction.
While not part of any TTC facility, "Spadina Line" by Brad Golden and Norman Richards is certainly of interest to fans of the TTC and rail in general.
Having learned from their experiences with the Spadina line, the Commission now stipulates that artwork be durable and easy to maintain, either integrated into the station's wall surfaces or housed in a tempered-glass display case.

Spadina Subway Extension - Downsview Station to Steeles Avenue   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
The study determined that extending and connecting the north ends of the Yonge and Spadina Subway lines across Steeles Avenue was the preferred alternative.
The recent TTC Rapid Transit Expansion Study shows that a future subway “Loop” along Steeles Avenue is no longer needed and that a “radial” extension via York University to a terminal station at Steeles Avenue is preferred.
This would allow commuter facilities (including a 10-bay bus terminal and a 1,000-space commuter parking lot) to be relocated from the York University campus lands (as proposed in the original EA Study) to the Hydro Corridor located approximately 250 metres north of Steeles.

In 1978, the Spadina segment of the line was opened, going from the north terminus of the University line to Wilson station.
This line is expected to see the next major phase of expansion: the "Spadina North" extension, which will bring the line to York University northwest of Downsview station, and into the city of Vaughan to the proposed Vaughan Corporate Centre.
The preferred alignment and placement for four stations for the proposed "Spadina North" extension beyond Downsview station to serve York University was finalized in September 2005.

On Spadina a fair distance south of Bloor Street, the LRT again plunges into the earth, and enters an extremely large tunnel network consisting of a very broad turning loop and various support tunnels.
During the construction of the Spadina loop I spent over an hour exploring the various tunnels, engine rooms and ventilation shafts, and also discovered ladders leading up to street level and holes leading down to the sewers underneath the station.
Late one night shortly before the opening of the new line, I revisited the Spadina LRT station to check on its progress, ducking through a tiny little hole in the drywall, and was surprised to find that security cameras had already been installed and were quite operational.

Spadina furrier Paul Magder was one of the few area merchants who were behind the streetcars from day one.
Stambler says the TTC has also pledged to stage construction on St. Clair so that segments of the street, like the popular Corso Italia between Lansdowne and Westmount Aves., will be open during high tourist and shopping seasons.
One problem that did mar the Spadina line significantly after it opened was a large spike in accidents, as cars making left turns along the roadway began bashing into streetcars at an alarming rate.

Subway expansion may have come to a temporary standstill, but TTC rail operations were marked by the opening of the Scarborough Rapid Transit (ICTS) line, the addition of CLRVs and ALRVs to the streetcar fleet, and the rebuilding of A8 PCC cars.
In February, 1987, TTC launched an initiative to extend 24-hour transit service to a greater percentage of Metro Toronto's population.
TTC's expanded night service would carry a new name--the BLUE NIGHT NETWORK--with blue-themed accoutrements to accent its identity: 300 series BLUE NIGHT route numbers, reflective blue bands on car and bus stop signs, and distinctive blue destination sign exposures.
