The Spall Guy - [Sunday Herald]
Spall plays Phil, a south London cabbie marooned in a world where ends never meet and communication has been pared down to the briefest of exchanges.
Today, Tim Spall is also marooned: on a sea of carpet in the centre of a hotel banqueting room where he is enduring a series of interviews prior to All Or Nothing's UK release.
Spall doesn't see Cruise's patronage as a lifeline to Hollywood, nor does he need to: his work speaks for itself and his profile there is increasing steadily, a boon to a man who even now seems to think destitution is just around the corner.

On 12/13 August 1918 near Parvillers, France, during an enemy counter-attack, Sergeant Spall's platoon became isolated, whereupon he took a Lewis gun and standing on the parapet, fired upon the advancing enemy, inflicting many casualties.
He then came down from the trench and directed his men into a sap 75 yards away, after which he picked up another Lewis gun, again climbed the parapet and held up the enemy with his fire, but while doing so was killed.

 SPSA Algorithm
The theory pertains to both local optimization (Spall, 1992) and global optimization in the face of multiple local optima (Maryak and Chin, 2001) and fully allows for noisy values of the objective function.
The algorithm has desirable properties for both global and local optimization in the sense that the gradient approximation is sufficiently noisy to allow for escape from local minima while being sufficiently informative about the slope of the function to facilitate local convergence.
This extension is the adaptive SPSA algorithm in Spall (2000), which provides an efficient stochastic analogue to the famous Newton-Raphson algorithm from deterministic optimization (which uses gradients and Hessian [second derivative] matrices of the objective function).
