Pythons Return, National Review Online: 'Spamalot" Cooks On Broadway - CBS News
Most of the time that’s true of Spamalot too, even if there are too many gay jokes (Idle was always attracted to the group’s smuttier side) and the show wobbles somewhat after the interval before rousing itself for a stirring finale.
Spamalot is then, in some way, a celebration of musicals themselves and the theatre's ability to wash away life’s troubles.
Spamalot demonstrates that the Pythons are far from extinct, they have not kicked the bucket nor shuffled off this mortal coil to join the choir invisible.

The similarities of style, and in some cases content, between "The Producers" and "Spamalot" are curious because in the late 1980s, Eric Idle, the Python member responsible for this new musical, reportedly approached Brooks about adapting "The Producers" for the stage.
The real inventiveness behind the silliness is seen in the way the musical deals with the challenge of adapting a bit from the movie in which a cow flies out of a castle.
"Spamalot" takes its big turn away from the film when the Knights of Ni decide Arthur and his followers have to stage a Broadway musical to get safe passage out of the forest.

Sir Lancelot’s rescue of the fey Prince Herbert (Borle) from the tower in the movie is expanded on greatly in Spamalot, even allowing for a colorful disco-driven number, “His Name Is Lancelot,” in which Lance is outed.
By the end of the show, he and Herbert are a couple and note that more than a thousand years later, such a coupling will still be a source of controversy.
