Movie Poop Shoot: Hollywood Elsewhere - September 24, 2004
A movie this funny and frantic and this totally off-the-planet (and yet strangely inside the whole universal anxiety syndrome that we all live with day to day) can't be that cosmically soothing.
This is one of those rare movies in which you have to double-dip it.
Any time there is a hit film, greedy movie companies try to get out their cookie cutters and profit from the scraps.

  Spanglish movie review
"Spanglish" is not just a shorthand for Spanish-English the language spoken by many Mexican-Americans in USA, but it is a pleasantly sentimental comedy about an immigrant mom from Mexico who resists her daughter's integration into mainstream America.
The movie follows Flor (Paz Vega) and her daughter Cristina (Shelbie Bruce) who are illegal immigrants living in Latino enclave in Los Angeles.
Movie has a rich blend of humor and emotionally touchy issues, presented with sadness as well as joy.

 SPANGLISH Movie Review
‘Spanglish’ is the story of cultures colliding as a beautiful native Mexican woman Flor (Paz Vega), the mother of an equally stunning 12-year-old daughter, a golden child, becomes the housekeeper for an affluent Los Angeles family (Adam Sandler and Téa Leoni).
‘Spanglish’ is comedy one minute, dramatic the next, not settling on one for too long and perhaps this is what keeps it moving along, albeit a little too long by the conclusion.
It is Cloris Leachman who is the saviour of this movie having the time of her life in a role wholly suited to her style.

 Movie Review - Spanglish
Spanglish is writer/director James L. Brooks' examination of the culture clash that arises in a modern world where people of different ethnic backgrounds can no longer carry on as anonymous entities burrowed on their own side of the tracks.
In Spanglish, we meet high-strung Deborah (Tea Leoni), who was recently laid off from her distinguished Beverly Hills managerial position and is now forced to manage her family's household.
It usually never really accomplishes anything in bridging the communication gap, but in the case of this movie it cleverly doubles as a metaphor for the idea of two merging cultures.

SPLICEDwire | "Spanglish" movie review (2004) "Spanglish" review, James L. Brooks, Adam Sandler, Téa Leoni, Paz ...
The fact that "Spanglish" is narrated through the contrivance of a college application letter is typical of the calculating, false tone of writer-director James L. Brooks' latest Oscar-baiting human-condition dramedy.
He is, of course, drawn to Flor's self-confidence and beauty in a timid, slow-burn fashion, and their mutual attraction (which is never explained or justified on her part) works some kind of restorative kismet on his devotion to his wife after other issues of trust have sent their marriage into a freefall.
The one element of "Spanglish" that does feel authentic is the indignation Flor feels when Leoni takes an excessive interest in her daughter, our narrator.

 MovieFreak.com - "Spanglish" Movie Review
Spanglish has me convinced that Sandler is capable of going the way of Jim Carrey (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) and Robin Williams (One Hour Photo) in taking on heady roles that move beyond slapstick, low brow, frat boy humor.
If it were, it would be a depressing, idealistic movie that would have no place during the holiday movie season.
Spanglish will leave you feeling grateful for things taken for granted like family, a loving husband, sanity and is a worthwhile film to see even if it is just to avoid another high budgeted Hollywood holiday saccharine overdose.

Spanglish: Movie-Source.com Spanglish Movie, Spanglish Preview, Spanglish Review
When the previews for "Spanglish" hit theaters last fall, presenting a comedy-drama starring the unlikely duo of Adam Sandler and Téa Leoni, I immediately nailed the film as the bore fest of the winter season.
Sure, "Spanglish" is more of a drama-comedy as it deals with the more serious sides of marriage and so forth, but it doesn't end with some cliché reveal-your-feelings-at-the-airport kind of scene (sorry to those who are looking for that kind of thing).
The movie all together is very well done, and puts out everything that it's got to create a very entertaining movie.

Christopher Smith : Week in Rewind.com Spanglish Movie Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-29)
Deborah’s whole being is focused solely on her own needs, and while her overbearing presence isn’t the only reason the movie fails, each time she enters the screen with her tantrums, her tears, her nasty scowl and her snotty nose, the movie sinks lower into a pit from which it can’t recover.
“Spanglish” is being sold as the story of a proud Mexican woman named Flor (Paz Vega) who comes illegally to the States with her daughter, Cristina (Shelbie Bruce), and eventually finds work cleaning for the wealthy Claskys.
The one thing he does right here is the casting of Leachman, who is so good as Evelyn, so calm amid the ongoing clash of personalities, that she must be the reason the film is currently be pushed for awards consideration.

Spanglish (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Spanglish is a 2004 American film written and directed by James L. Brooks, and starring Adam Sandler, Téa Leoni, Paz Vega, and Cloris Leachman.
The movie opens showing a Princeton University admissions board reviewing freshman applications and reading the essays that accompany them.
The question for the essay is, “Who has been the most influential person in your life?” The reviewers are met with unremarkable answers and uninteresting explanations, but one essay stands out: that of Cristina Moreno (Shelbie Bruce), who cites her mother Flor (Paz Vega) as the most influential person in her life.

Brooks's latest, SPANGLISH, a warmly inviting story that sneaks up on you and grabs you, is easily one of the best movies of the year.
After seeing the movie, however, Academy members should realize that there is no point in voting this year in the supporting actress category.
The movie's funniest scene, which is the funniest movie moment in any film this year, occurs when Cristina (Shelbie Bruce), Flor's precocious little charmer of a daughter, translates during a sticky moment between Flor and her employer's husband, John (Adam Sandler).

SPANGLISH used slapstick approach, beginning with focus on Adam Sandler of the superfluff/toilet mouth 'comedy' genre, to publicize this little story into a COMEDY.
"Spanglish" is a minor blip in the career that is James Brook's but the one thing of which it will always be remembered is the introduction of the luminous and incandescent Paz Vega to the American screen.
The movie starts with Flor who has recently immigrated to L.A. from Mexico, and is trying to find a better life for her remarkable daughter, Cristina played by Shelbie Bruce.

Reel Movie Guys - Spanglish Review
Combining two different cultures into one heartwarming tale of love, life and the decisions people make on behalf of their children, Spanglish is simply charming.
Enter the absolutely breathtaking Flor Moreno (Paz Vega) and her child into the picture and the sacrifices that parents make for their loved little ones is on full display.
There may be some confusion as to who's story is actually being told here, but as the title suggests, maybe you are not supposed to differentiate: when it comes to being there for your kids, all languages are the same.

The movie is based on the struggles of relationships, with others and with ourselves.
While mainstream critics are calling Spanglish a serious stumble from Oscar-regular James Brooks, religious press critics seem surprised and delighted to find a film in which adultery is portrayed as the wrong decision.
Michael Elliott (Movie Parables) says, "The characters are very well defined and the relationships formed between them are strong and interesting but for some reason Brooks doesn't explore them very deeply.

I would have loved to see a larger role for her in this film, but she is a joy to watch in every scene she's in.
The reason why I give it a perfect score of 5 stars is because of actresses Paz Vega, Cloris Leachman, and the two girls who play the daughters; along with the surprising turns this film makes; and the overall message one receives at the end of the movie.
As usual, Adam Sandler's acting left much to be desired, and as usual, he mumbled a bit in at least one of the scenes.

The detail in the string writing is astounding; as is the performance, where you can literally hear the bow bounce of the snares, it adds so much energy to the cue.
It is truly unlike any Zimmer score out there, though admittedly a movie like King Arthur or Thunderbirds would not be likely to give him the opportunity to showcase this kind of writing.
Spanglish, which was nominated for a Golden Globe in 2004, is a very welcome departure for Zimmer as it once again shows that he is so much more talented than he is often credited for.
