ALPHONSO - LoveToKnow Article on ALPHONSO
Spanish Kings. From Alphonso I. (730-757) to Alphonso V. (999-1028) the personal history of the Spanish kings of this Kings of name is unknown and their very dates are disputed.
They are the answer to the poet of the nobles who represented the king as having submitted to take a degrading oath at the hands of Ruy Diaz of Bivar (the Cid), in the church of Santa Gadea at Burgos, and as having then persecuted the brave man who defied him.
The king quarrelled with the church, and particularly the Cistercians, almost as violently as with his wife.

Spanish colonization of the Americas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Spanish conquest and colonization of the Americas began with the arrival in America of Christopher Columbus in 1492.
As large numbers of Indians died under the cruel working conditions in Spanish mines, ranches and encomiendas, and as de las Casas and others began to call attention to Spanish mistreatment of the natives, landowners in New Spain began to look for alternative sources of labor.
Spanish territorial claims based on this furthest north penetration of Spain in North America were not supported at the treaty negotiations.

The Spanish Military Orders   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-28)
The Spanish Christians were forced to put aside their internal conflicts and, with the help of the Templars, who had established themselves in a number of border fortresses, united to defeat this new threat to their security.
The Spanish Kings had frequently obtained the election of close connections of their families as Masters of the Orders and at Calatrava in 1489, Santiago in 1494 and Alcántara in 1495 the administration of the three Magisteries were ultimately granted to King Ferdinand of Aragón, as Sovereign of Aragón and King-Consort of Castille.
The Fleece was therefore the preferred award of the Spanish Kings for foreigners and the greatest nobles, while the four Orders were used to honor service to the Crown, until the establishment of the Order of Charles III, whose lowest rank also could be granted to less illustrious individuals.

The Controversy over Justification of Spanish Rule in the Philippines   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-28)
The same indirect authority rested with the king and, by papal concession, was restricted solely to him to avoid friction and confusion in the new Lands.
For Salazar and Benavides the King of Spain had yet to become the political sovereign of the Philippines; his only authority was as an instrument of the spiritual power of the pope, directly so over the Christians and indirectly over the pagans.
In light of all this, it is therefore truly amazing that a king, on whose empire the sun never set, should have evinced such an unswerving determination to seek the free acceptance of his dominion over a people whom he had ruled as subjects for more than thirty years.

It was entirely controlled by the Spanish kings, and the pope's only hold over it was in naming the inquisitor general chosen by the kings.
The extreme penalties during the days of the Spanish inquisition were imposed by the state, as heresy was considered to be a crime in those days, and abuses took place on the part of the inquisitors.
The danger feared under the Emperor Charles V and King Philip II was that heresy might become associated with factious movements among the nobility, or that its professors might join hands with the Moslem "underground" and the Grand Turk.

 Decline of Spain - Kings
But the Spanish viceroys were a strong source of information from abroad, furthermore, if Catholic France and Italy could prosper, there seems no ground to claim it as a cause for Spain's declines.
The Kings who presided over them were faced with the inevitable task of maintaining an Empire that was already in decline.
This suggests that the responsibility lay with the kings of the 17th century.

The purpose of the Spanish Inquisition was to discover and punish converted Jews (and later Muslims) who were insincere.

Chapter 13: The Individuality of Portugal
The inclusion of the Alentejo and the Algarve may be largely, although not entirely, credited to the determination of ambitious Portuguese kings and nobles, and to the preoccupation of Spanish kings and nobles with affairs elsewhere in the peninsula.
However, that it was not merely an historical accident -- the chance decisions of kings and nobles -- that made the area Portuguese, is indicated by the boundaries of the Roman Conventus Iuridicus as well as the boundaries of the church, neither of which differed greatly from those of present southern Portugal.
It was in 1295 that King Diniz of Portugal essentially established the present eastern boundaries of Portugal, with one exception.

Aranjuez was beloved of Spanish kings for its dreamy atmosphere, created partly by the warm and humid air of the meadows along the River Tagus.

Gondola "voyages" on the Tagus were popular with Spanish kings, just as gondolas were popular at Versailles (which had a moat instead of a river).
