At this stage the river water was quite tea coloured, a condition that prevailed until a bit past the forks, where the two upper branches of the Spanish join.
The river is not in a wilderness, and we passed some elaborate cabins before and on Spanish Lake.
The lower part of the river is shallower, and we had to be careful to pick our way through the fast parts, or we would run out of water and have to wade through the shallows.

The Spanish River and Domtar mill in Espanola
The Spanish River is in northern Ontario, Canada, which flows 240 km in a southerly direction from its headwaters in Lake Biscotasi (west branch) and Duke Lake (east branch).
The river's name and the name of the nearby town of Espanola, Ontario are due to French explorers/Jesuit priests encountering Ojibway native peoples speaking Spanish in the area, apparently as a result of a Spanish woman having been taking captive during an expedition far to the south.

Because of this the Spanish is one of the best training rivers in Ontario and is ideally suited to canoeists who have some flat water experience and want to be gently introduced to moving water.
It is also one of the most scenic rivers in Ontario and and we will travel it it a slow enough pace to allow time for photography, writing, sketching, hiking and exploring.

The Spanish River Provincial Park, on the shore of Lake Huron north of Manitoulin Island, was created in 1999 as part of the Living Legacy process.
At its narrowest the park is only two hundred metres on each shore of the Spanish, however it beefs up significantly at the headwaters of the river, and below Pogamasing Lake, where it incorporates some of the more important stands of ancient forest found near the river.
One critical area is still being considered as an addition to the park, and that is the remainder of the old growth around Rushbrook and Marion Lakes, which are part of a watershed that is entirely pristine, and they are largely surrounded by old growth pine.
