The Spanish settlement of Villa de la Vega was founded by governor Francisco de Garay in 1534 as the capital of the colony.
Since the town was badly damaged during the conquest, Port Royal took on many administrative roles and functioned as an unofficial capital during the beginning of the English reign.
The inland Spanish Town remained the capital until 1872, when the seat of the colony was moved to Kingston.

Soldiers were brought into Spanish Town, St. Catherine, last week to help restore order after gunmen stormed the area, causing people to flee for their lives and a shutdown of businesses.
GRAPPLING FOR a solution to Spanish Town's crime problem, the St. Catherine Chamber of Commerce has pledged to provide computers for the embattled police there to help them manage their database of criminals.
The town, which has been rocked by bouts of gang warfare and scores of murders since January, was virtually shut down Monday after Oliver 'Bubba' Smith, the reputed leader of the 'One Order Gang', was murdered on Whitehall Avenue in St. Andrew.

EL CENIZO, Texas (Reuters) - The border town of El Cenizo, whose population is heavily Hispanic, has adopted Spanish as its official language and declared the community a safe haven for illegal immigrants, officials said Friday.
The ramshackle town of 7,800 people is located just south of Laredo, Texas, across the Rio Grande River from Mexico.
That means that town business will be conducted in Spanish, which then will be translated into English for official documents to meet the requirements of Texas law.
